The Kentucky Wildcats pulled off another win, even if it wasn’t pretty. On Saturday, they beat the Ole Miss Rebels 72-63 on a chilly winter day in Lexington. Kentucky extended its winning streak to five and boosted its record to 14-6 (5-2) in SEC play. Next up, the Wildcats head to Nashville on Tuesday to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Otega Oweh Shines Again

Senior Otega Oweh was the star of the week, dropping a game-high 23 points (10-13 FT), with 20 of them coming in the second half. The team’s leader has been on a roll, playing a huge role in their win over the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday. With the victory against the Rebels, Kentucky has now pushed its winning streak to five straight games.

The Wildcats have faced challenges throughout the season, but now they seem to have regained their spark and rediscovered their standout player from last year. Oweh’s contributions in SEC conference play will be key in shaping the team’s chances moving forward.

Defense Wins Again

The offense has struggled for much of the season, but whenever they hit a rough patch, the defense steps up to keep them in it—just like in the win over Ole Miss. The Wildcats held the Rebels to 23 first-half points, their lowest of the season, as Ole Miss shot just 7-of-28 from the field in the first half. The Rebels also shot 1-10 from three in the second half.

On Wednesday night, Kentucky held the Longhorns to just 2-of-18 from three and limited the Tennessee Volunteers to only 36 points in the second half. The Wildcats’ defense will be a key factor moving forward, especially with trips to Nashville and a matchup next weekend against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Muck up the game and play tight defense, Kentucky has a real chance.

Can Kentucky Score?

The Wildcats’ biggest issue all season has been their struggle to score. Today, they went through a four-minute drought without a field goal, stalling on offense and letting the Rebels hang around. The turning point came late when Collin Chandler drained a three, putting Kentucky up by six with 47 seconds left, essentially icing the game, and free throws sealed the deal.

The Wildcats have some serious issues ahead if their offense doesn’t find consistency. Kentucky managed to survive today, but with Vanderbilt up next and a road trip to Arkansas looming, it simply can’t afford long stretches without scoring. Road games could spiral out of control, and even home games could get dicey. The offense needs fixing.

One key moment was when former Wildcat Travis Perry returned to Rupp Arena today and was immediately booed as his name was announced in the starting lineup. The Lyon County native faced boos every time he touched the ball and ended the game scoreless, going 0-for-3 from the field.

End Of My Kentucky Wildcats Basketball Rant

Another standout in the game was freshman Jasper Johnson, who hit a three-pointer to put Kentucky up by four when the Wildcats were struggling offensively. They’ll need Johnson even more down the stretch, especially with Jaland Lowe out and Kam Williams sidelined by a broken foot suffered on Wednesday.

Up next is a trip to Nashville. Kentucky has enjoyed some success against Vanderbilt, but this season the Commodores are having one of their best runs, boasting a 17-3 record and a top-15 national ranking. Fresh off a win against Mississippi State on Saturday, the Wildcats and Commodores are set for a crucial matchup on Tuesday night.
