Over the past week, the Kentucky Wildcats have been on an impressive run. They have picked up road wins against the LSU Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers, along with home victories over the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns. This surge has taken them from 0-2 in conference play to 4-2, leaving them just a loss to the Missouri Tigers away from sitting atop the SEC standings.
In the first half, neither team could gain much separation as they traded baskets, heading into halftime tied at 40-40 in a game vital to both teams’ NCAA tournament hopes. In the second half, the Wildcats continued their trend from conference play, delivering their best basketball after the break with a 6-0 run to take the lead. The Longhorns fought back, led by Dailyn Swain’s impressive 29 points, six rebounds, and three assists, but ultimately fell short.
The Wildcats will aim to extend their winning streak to five when the Ole Miss Rebels visit this Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the season, Collin Chandler’s play was inconsistent. In the last few games, though, he’s shown flashes of his form from last year and become a big part of the team’s success. Tonight, he scored 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field (2-for-4 from three) and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
The roster needs a leader alongside Otega Oweh. Chandler has to be the one to step up and take on that role, especially with Jaland Lowe out for the season and Jayden Quaintance still sidelined with knee swelling. Making matters worse, tonight Kam Williams went down with a non-contact foot injury, left the game, and never returned. There are no updates yet on his condition.
Best wishes to Williams, and hopefully the prognosis isn’t long-term.
This season has been full of ups and downs for Kentucky’s defense, with some nights showing strong performances and others falling flat. Tonight, they got the job done, holding the Longhorns to just 2-of-18 from three-point range and altering shots effectively. A big part of that was Oweh stepping up as a leader, forcing mistakes, and capitalizing on them. He is one of the best at reading passes and making opponents slip up, and Oweh’s presence, along with the overall defensive effort, was a major reason for the win.
Turning defense into offense was a key factor in tonight’s win, one the Wildcats badly needed for their tournament hopes. Four straight victories and a 4-2 conference record, they have a real chance to make some noise—if they can cut down on slow starts and finish games strong. A win’s a win, so take it.
The Wildcats are set to host the Rebels early Saturday afternoon, weather permitting. Kentucky is under a winter storm watch, with ice, snow, and freezing rain expected to hit the area. Uncertainty surrounding the game and others across the country, many matchups are being rescheduled, so it’s a wait-and-see situation as game time approaches.
This was a big win for the Wildcats, who were up by ten late and had to battle to secure the victory, showing real resolve. After Ole Miss comes to town, they’ll hit the road to face the surging Vanderbilt Commodores, followed by an Arkansas Razorbacks team that plays as well as anyone at home. If they win on Saturday, weather permitting, it’s a win-win no matter what happens next week.
