Kentucky concluded the regular season in a manner reminiscent of how they began, resembling Old Kentucky at the start of the season.
Mark Pope has had an impressive first season at Kentucky, achieving a school record for top-15 wins, which is remarkable for a first-year coach.
Kentucky made a great choice with Mark Pope at the helm, and he has a chance to rack up even more wins as the team heads into the SEC tournament this week and looks ahead to the NCAA tournament.
Kentucky brought incredible energy to its game against Missouri and then some. It performed well on the boards, effectively contained Missouri’s top scorer, Caleb Grill, and forced several turnovers. Overall, it was a fantastic performance from the Wildcats today.
The most significant part of the defense is the return of Lamont Butler, with his on-ball defense and ability to create turnovers and force mistakes. If Kentucky can play to the level they brought on the road today, they have the opportunity to do special things in the next few weeks, heading into the biggest part of their season.
Injuries have limited Andrew Carr’s ability to perform all season long, but today, he looked like the old Carr we saw at the start of the season against Duke in a game he dominated. Carr has also had to regain his starting job after losing it due to injuries, but right now, he’s playing at the level we all expected.
Also playing big with Carr was Koby Brea, who had 17 points, along with Carr’s 16 points. When the bench and role players come in and contribute, this Kentucky team can play with anybody in the country, and today ,they looked like the old Kentucky we saw that won big games in November and December.
Otega Oweh also scored 22 points in another game. The big-time transfer from Oklahoma continues to have a great season under Pope.
Chandler has had his ups and downs all season long and has had to adjust to basketball more than everybody else due to being on a mission trip for two years, and you are seeing some of the good things pay dividends.
Chandler scored eight points on 3-5 shooting and hit some big shots to push Kentucky’s lead out. The game might have changed momentum if not for a few buckets from him.
As the season concludes, next is the SEC tournament, which hasn’t been good for Kentucky basketball and its fans in years past. This is a chance for them to get on a mini-run, as they’ve ended the season with back-to-back wins.
The SEC tournament bracket will be released later in the day to see where the Wildcats will land, as more games still have to be played to determine the seeding and pairings. The good news for Kentucky is that they’ve stayed out of the dreaded eight-seed game and will play in the lower bracket opposite Auburn.
As the Wildcats head toward Nashville, so will Big Blue Nation. They travel well, they show up, and they are loud. As long as I can remember, it’s always been a huge week, and this week will be no different as fans from different teams show up to support the SEC and bring money to Nashville.
Be loud, and as the old saying goes, “You never know what will happen.” As the season ends today, it’s been one fun ride, and this is only the beginning as the real season begins this week.
