Izzo’s experience helped lead his defenders guard star Donovan Dent and other threats from the Lobos. Michigan State’s bench outscored New Mexico’s 36 to 7, providing scoring throughout the contest and when New Mexico experienced scoring droughts. The Spartans largely benefited from their bench, especially when controlling fatigue and adjustments.
The Spartans’ defense encouraged the Lobos to shoot from the perimeter while they drove to the rim, gaining foul opportunities. The Michigan State Defense played very well, avoiding fouling, retaining their rotation, and keeping key players on the court for crucial moments later. On the flip side, New Mexico lost their talented big man, Nelly Junior Joseph, due to foul trouble. Nelly had to leave the game with 2:12 left in the contest, which sparked an offensive run that put the finishing touches on Michigan State’s victory.
