The New York Yankees are at risk of missing the postseason due to their rocky summer record, but Giancarlo Stanton may be the solution to help patch up those wounds. Since his return from injury, Stanton has had a phenomenal start to his season. He has been a shining light in the dark cloud that looms over the Bronx, and he may once again lift the Yankees back to postseason contention.
At the start of the 2025 season, reports stated that Stanton would be missing a chunk of games because of an elbow injury. This injury had come from the 2024 postseason, where Stanton was raking the entire way to the World Series. This performance earned Stanton the AL Postseason MVP Award and a trip to the World Series. Stanton did his best in his World Series debut with his two home runs, but it did not end in victory for him and the Yankees.
Despite how the World Series ended, Stanton’s numbers were incredible throughout the postseason trip. He batted .273 with 15 hits, seven home runs, and 16 RBIs in the 14 games played in the 2024 postseason. This performance garnered many praises and much love from Yankees fans who had initially written him off due to his history of struggling throughout the regular season. Yankees fans had high hopes that Stanton would be healthy enough to have a great 2025 season after his performance in the 2024 postseason.
Hope was lost when Stanton was out before the season even started, missing the first half of it. Fans began to worry that the 2024 postseason would be the last they would see of a “prime” Stanton, and he would revert to struggling in the regular season. There were fears that he would post similar numbers to 2023, when he had a sub-100 wRC+ of 87. The elbow injury conjured up fears that it would suppress his hitting power when he returned. The extended time off and recovery from injury may have been beneficial to Stanton, especially with how he has been showing out since his return.
Stanton returned in the middle of June and has turned back the clock in Yankee Stadium. In the 42 games he played since his return, he slashed .300/.376/.586 with a 164 wRC+ and 12 home runs. His return during this second half of the season has been a beacon for the Yankees as they have been dropping down the standings, and are now in third place in the AL East.
Just recently, Stanton had a four-hit performance with a home run and three RBI against the Minnesota Twins. In his last ten games, his batting average is at .429 with 12 hits, three home runs, and eight RBIs. As Aaron Judge slowly works his way back to hitting like a generational player, Stanton is there to help carry the offense. Yankees fans can hope that the team can stay within the Wild Card standings at the very least, so that Stanton can maybe once again demolish his way back to the World Series.
The Bronx Bombers have had a roller coaster of a 2025 season. From a dominant April and May to an injury-riddled and obnoxious defensive summer, the Yankees have been through it all. The Yankees have been bitten once again by the injury bug, and it has severely affected the entire team.
The sloppy defense and injuries have resulted in a free fall into the Wild Card and fears of slipping out of the playoffs. With a guy like Giancarlo Stanton back playing like it’s 2017 again, there can only be hope for the Yankees to get back to World Series contention.
