Ethan Nwaneri might not be a household name like Ronaldo or Messi, or fall among the top soccer stars yet, but Arsenal finalising his new deal could turn out to be one of the most important decisions of their summer. This is even more critical than any big-money signing or defensive reshuffle that has been made. This is because, in today’s game, the act of winning titles is about more than just who is bought; it’s about who is kept on the team and who the club doesn’t let get away just like that. In September 2022, when he made his first league debut at the age of 15, Nwaneri was selected to replace Fabio Vieira in the second half of a match, assisting Arsenal in a 3–0 win at Brentford. Mikel Arteta said he named Nwaneri and two other under-21 players on the bench because the team had many injuries.

Now, reports say Arsenal are in the final stages of securing him on a long-term deal, and that’s a move with long-term results.
If Arsenal would have let Nwaneri slip to a rival like City or Chelsea, it would have been a repeat of the Serge Gnabry story, whereby a top-tier talent leaves too soon and flourishes elsewhere.

Arteta has once said he isn’t rushing Nwaneri, but sees the long-term potential. “I am responsible to build a career for him. You have to do that brick by brick. Today he put another brick, “said Arteta. This means wrapping up this contract now means Arsenal won’t be forced to panic-buy in maybe two years for a role they’ve already taken a lot of time to nurture in-house.
