This was the situation with Chris Eubank Jr., who is gaining attention for striking his opponent, Conor Benn, on the head. The silver lining is that he used an egg for the impact.
In line with boxing tradition, a face-to-face meeting between the fighters often helps build excitement for an upcoming match. A few days ago, as is customary, Eubank Jr. stood face to face with Connor Benn. What happened after now seems like pure theatrics—or was it?
Chris Eubank Jr. is set to face off against Conor Benn this April in a showdown that has been years in the making. That anticipation can be related to many factors. Primarily, it could be due to the cancellation of the original match. As reported by Yahoo News, the two were slated to step into the ring in 2022, but unforeseen circumstances led to a delay.
The fight was postponed when Benn reportedly failed a mandatory drug test, testing positive for clomiphene—a fertility drug typically used by women who struggle to ovulate—though he consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Was he guilty? One must first ascertain if the substance in question is performance-enhancing and then if it is explicitly prohibited. While the substance is typically taken as part of a fertility agent for women, it does have performance-enhancing attributes for men. As Sports Integrity notes,
“Clomiphene is a non-steroidal medication used clinically to induce ovulation in women and increase testosterone levels in males. With the first question being answered, what about the second? As ESPN notes,
Clomiphene is a substance banned inside and outside competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). ”
Benn fervently denied the allegations. With the fervent denial, one could see how this raised eyebrows and led to further investigation. The summation was that there was inconclusive proof that Benn used the specific substance. The lack of clarity in being able to identify that Benn was using Clomiphene led to a reversal of the earlier decision. ESPN notes, ‘
His suspension has now been lifted after UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), the organization responsible for protecting sport in the U.K. from doping, was not comfortably satisfied that UKAD had proved its case against Benn.”
These are the facts behind the postponement, and it reads better than any scripted drama. Adding to the tension is the historical significance of the match. The fathers of these two fighters faced each other in the ring nearly thirty years ago.

Reportedly, both parties have exchanged words over social media. The tension reached its peak at their meet-up. A verbal confrontation ensued before Eubanks Jr. pulled an egg from his pocket and smashed it on Benn’s head. Security intervened before Benn could retaliate. DAZN recounted the incident most dramatically.
“Eubank bends his left ear, face to the cameras, as his rival continues to speak. Then, the moment arrives. Eubank rears back ever so slightly, shoulders rigid for a beat. His left arm draws back and then, in a flash, his palm makes contact with Benn’s right cheek. The egg cracks. Pandemonium erupts.
Can one say premeditated? Who carries an egg in their pocket without intending to use it? Eubank Jr. has since confessed why he chose an egg. Some researchers have discovered Benn’s significant egg intake before testing. This, “egg contamination,” is said to have likely been contributory to Benn’s previous drug test failure. Eubank used this information as ammunition.
Following the current debacle, Benn took to X to share his thoughts. He wrote,
“It seems egg contamination was the cause of his two failed drug tests. So, I contaminated him with an egg.”
A lot is happening here. Interested fans want to know: Was it purely for dramatic effect, or was it Eubank Jr. seizing the moment to vent his frustration? It’s hard to say, but Eubank Jr.’s actions were likely a strategic move to draw attention. It didn’t hurt that he could also relieve tension in the process. It certainly worked, as this incident has now made headline news and continues to trend.
How will this unfold? Time will provide the answers. Adding more fuel to the fire, however, is not necessary. There is built-in tension. As Eddie Hearn is cited in DAZN,
“I think these guys are fighting for their fathers. Nigel feels like he was robbed in the second fight and never got the third. Eubank feels he was the bigger star.”
Drama can be like wildfire, catching. Perhaps we’re in for more, as the hour nears for both to prove their mettle in the ring. As fans know from previous pre-bout incidents, it does not indicate anything. A look back at the pre-Tyson and Jake Paul bout is solid proof that the real outcomes are determined in the ring. It is only then that the world can ascertain if there was ever morsmoke showmoke-show involved.
