The 2025 Big Ten Championship marks the first time the nation’s top two teams will meet in the title game. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Indiana Hoosiers will make the short trip to Indianapolis to battle for the conference crown and the top seed in the College Football Playoff.
These teams have been on a collision course ever since Indiana shocked the Oregon Ducks on the road in October. Both avoided slip-ups down the stretch and now meet with everything on the line Saturday.
Both quarterbacks enter this matchup firmly in the Heisman race, and this game will likely shape the outcome. Julian Sayin and Fernando Mendoza have led explosive offenses with poise and consistency all season.
An overlooked factor is the contrast between each team’s wide receiver units. Everyone knows Ohio State’s group is elite, but Indiana’s duo of Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. has also been outstanding. The Hoosier tandem each topped 650 yards despite limited snaps due to blowouts and injuries.
The Buckeyes have strong answers in the secondary, though. Cornerbacks Davison Igbinosun, Lorenzo Styles Jr., and Jermaine Mathews Jr. have been lockdown all year. Safeties Jaylen McClain and Caleb Downs provide steady support on the backend if needed.
The biggest questions involve Indiana’s ability to protect against Ohio State’s dynamic pass rush and whether its secondary can handle the Buckeyes’ athleticism. Talent was the deciding factor in last year’s game, but another season with Curt Cignetti at the helm should help Indiana close the gap.
The headliner is Indiana cornerback D’Angelo Ponds against Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith. The two were high school teammates and now meet on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
With so much attention potentially drawn to Smith, Carnell Tate becomes a pivotal target in Ohio State’s passing attack. Add running back Bo Jackson to the equation, and the Buckeyes’ offense becomes nearly impossible to contain.
Another important matchup is Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia versus Mendoza. Patricia will throw a wide range of pressures and disguises at Indiana’s signal caller. The Hoosier quarterback handled Oregon’s defense well early in the season but struggled against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Ohio State’s defense is an even tougher test.
Along with Mendoza, the Buckeyes’ defense will need to account for Indiana’s backfield duo of Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black. They’ve combined for 1,595 rushing yards and powered the nation’s ninth-ranked rushing attack.
For Indiana to stay in this game, its offensive line must protect Mendoza and create lanes for its running backs. That won’t be easy, as Ohio State’s front seven is one of, if not the best, in the country. Linebackers Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles have caused problems for opponents all season in both the running and passing game. Nose tackle Kayden McDonald and defensive ends Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and Caden Curry have also consistently dominated up front.
Ohio State enters as a 5.5-point favorite with an over/under of 48.5 as of Wednesday morning. The Buckeyes sit at -225 on the moneyline, while Indiana comes in at +185.
I like Ohio State to win and cover. I expect a competitive game through the first two and a half quarters, much like last week’s matchup with Michigan, before the Buckeyes pull away late. My pick: Ohio State 27, Indiana 19.
The 2025 Big Ten Championship is the most anticipated matchup in the game’s history. Many doubt Indiana’s ability to hang with college football’s elite, but the Hoosiers are poised to show they belong on this stage. Both teams will learn plenty about themselves before heading into the College Football Playoff.
