On Wednesday afternoon, the University of Kentucky Wildcats kicked off a new era of football, and the energy was electric. You could feel the excitement in the air as Will Stein shared his vision for the program and its future.
In his opening remarks, Stein assured Wildcat fans that there’s hope and a reason to believe in what Kentucky football can accomplish. “Honored is an understatement,” he said. “I honestly don’t know what to say. I thought today was a dream, and yesterday too. It’s been an absolutely unbelievable last 24 to 48 hours.”
“We’re a national brand,” he said. “We work in the best conference in the world. There’s no reason why we can’t be successful here. Zero. The excuses are done. It’s time to get to work. It will work. It does take work.”
Excitement is in the air, and Wildcats fans will have to wait until next fall to channel that long-awaited energy from a coach who truly believes in this program.
Another key takeaway from Stein was the fact he believes in his offensive capabilities and his play-calling. “We’re going to play an exciting brand of football,” Stein said. “That’s the only way I know how to do it. We’re going to take risks … Our offense, our plan, is to light up the scoreboard. Why not? I’ve seen it done here many times.”
What Kentucky’s offense has been lacking was the kind of football Stein delivers – explosive plays, high scoring, bold calls, and an energy that gets Wildcat fans fired up. It’s the same exciting style once led by former UK coaches Hal Mumme and Mike Leach, and it’s a much-needed breath of fresh air.
In another major shake-up for Kentucky’s program, Will Stein has named former Oregon Ducks director of recruiting Pat Biondo as the new general manager. Before his stint at Oregon, Biondo spent three seasons with the Texas A&M Aggies under Jimbo Fisher, serving as senior assistant of recruiting and operations.
After spending four seasons in Eugene and three alongside Stein, this move was hardly surprising. Kentucky fans have longed for someone like Biondo to bring his influence to Lexington. With Oregon’s high-level recruiting classes under his leadership, some big developments are expected with Stein now taking the helm.
With Stein juggling multiple roles as Oregon gears up for the College Football Playoff, expect Biondo to jump in and start building the roster quickly.
No pun intended, but this is the most electrifying moment in Kentucky football history, with buzz and excitement at an all-time high. With the chance to make some noise in the SEC under a young, inspiring coordinator who’s among the best in the country. Time to stand up—and the fans are absolutely juiced.
Watching the press conference, Stein’s words and enthusiasm really stood out. With deep roots in Kentucky—his dad having played football at Kentucky under Jerry Claiborne. Someone who understands the job and expects to win. As Stein said, there’s no time for excuses; the time is now.
A lot of fun is coming, Wildcat fans.
It was a slam dunk of a day and a grand slam hire, one that will resonate all spring and summer. In the presser, Stein also gave an honorable mention to Mark Stoops and the strong foundation he built. The guy gets it—he’s one of us, Big Blue Nation.
