Manchester United has won many trophies both domestically and in Europe. The club owes much to some of its great managers, who have won many trophies for the Red Devils, dating back to the golden post-war era. These are the best Manchester United managers in history.
Busby is the longest-serving soccer manager in Manchester United’s history. Busby became Manchester United team manager in the post-war era and soon established some good sides that finished runners-up in the league numerous times during the late 1940s. They also won the FA Cup in 1948. In the early 1950s, Busby started to bring in younger players who would become the Busby Babe Manchester United sides. This team won the League title twice during the 1950s and was the first English team to play in the European Cup.
However, the Munich air crash broke up this team, and it would be left for Busby to form a new Manchester United side. In the 1960s, that new Manchester United side included players such as Charlton, Best, and Law. Further glory returned to Manchester United when they won the FA Cup and two League titles. In Europe, the European Cup had remained elusive until 1968 when the Red Devils won the 1968 European Cup final 4–1 against Benfica. Busby retired soon after, although he remained at Old Trafford as a director. Today, Busby is considered one of the great Manchester United football club managers on and off the pitch.
Docherty emerged as Manchester United’s team manager during the 1970s. The early 1970s had not been a good spell for the club on the pitch, and the Red Devils struggled in the league. In his first season, Docherty did enough to prevent relegation but could not do the same the season after.
Despite this, Docherty continued and revived Manchester United’s fortunes as they soon gained promotion back to the First Division and then finished as high as third in the league. They also reached two FA Cup finals, the first of which was lost, and Man Utd beat Liverpool 2–1 in the second final between the teams. This marked the high point of Docherty’s time with Manchester United, and he left soon after. However, many fans consider Docherty to have been the best Man Utd team manager between Busby and Ferguson.
Ferguson also arrived at Old Trafford when the Man Utd team was struggling in the league. During his first few seasons, Ferguson did not have an especially big impact, and no trophies were won. Some even called for his dismissal during his first trophy-winning season when they struggled in the league.
Victory in the 1990 FA Cup final was the first trophy of many. Two league and FA Cup doubles and a triple followed during the 1990s. Ferguson also won two European Cups with the club and reached two other Champions League finals, in which Barcelona defeated them. His best Man Utd teams dominated the Premiership, and Ferguson has won the most trophies with the Manchester United football club. Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning a record 13 league titles.
Those were three great Manchester United soccer managers. The best Manchester Utd managers brought glory to Old Trafford, winning three European Cups and a multitude of league and FA Cup trophies between them. Indeed, Busby and Ferguson have won most of the club’s major honors. Now Man Utd need to appoint another great manager for the seasons ahead to restore the Red Devils among Europe’s elite teams.
