The Bears vs Patriots matchup on Thursday Night Football was supposed to be a showcase for two of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the league. It delivered on every promise — and then added a twist nobody saw coming.

Caleb Williams and Drake Maye both threw for over 300 yards at Soldier Field on Thursday night. Both threw two touchdown passes. Both were sharp, composed and capable of winning the game on their own.

In the Bears vs Patriots battle of first-round draft picks, almost everything was identical on the stat sheet. Almost.

There it is. One interception. One turnover. That was the only real difference between the two quarterbacks on the night — and it was the difference that decided the game.

How The Bears vs Patriots Game Unfolded

The Chicago Bears came out flying. Williams led his side to a 10-0 first-quarter lead, with D’Andre Swift punching it in for the touchdown. The New England Patriots looked flat and disorganised from the opening drive.

Then Drake Maye took over.

The Patriots quarterback scrambled for a touchdown to make it 10-6, with the score initially overturned before being confirmed on review. New England then traded scores with Chicago through a breathless second quarter that had both fan bases on their feet.

By halftime, the Bears led 20-14. The game was still far from over.

The Interception That Settled The Bears Vs Patriots Game

The back-breaking moment came when Maye threw an underthrown interception in the second quarter on a play where he had tight end Eli Raridon running open in the end zone. It was the only turnover either quarterback would throw all night — and it proved decisive.

The Bears did not score directly from the turnover but did exactly what good teams do with the lead and the ball. They controlled the clock, moved the chains and pushed the score to 30-21 through a Cairo Santos 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. A late 47-yard field goal from New England made it 30-24, setting up a nervy finish before the Bears sealed it by recovering an onside kick.

Williams and Luther Burden III — The Connection That Won The Game

While the interception was Maye’s critical mistake, the story of Williams’s night was his connection with wide receiver Luther Burden III. The Williams-to-Burden connection was responsible for a sizable chunk of Chicago’s production. The duo linked up four times for 130 yards and a touchdown — a 32-yard average per catch.

Rhamondre Stevenson was actually New England’s leading receiver on the night — a sign that Maye struggled to get his wide receivers consistently involved against Chicago’s secondary.

Why The Bears vs Patriots Result Matters Beyond One Game

Here is the bigger picture. There should no longer be any doubt when it comes to Williams’ place among the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

He finished Thursday night with zero turnovers, 405 total yards of offense and a 116.7 passer rating in a winning performance. More importantly, he did it on a night when his opposing quarterback statistically outplayed him in completion percentage and passing yards — and still lost.

That is what elite quarterbacks do. They do not beat themselves.

Maye played well for most of the night — completing 24 of 31 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns. It just was not enough to edge Williams, who finished with 308 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers.

Patriots Pay For 16 Missed Tackles

The interception was far from New England’s only problem on the night. The Patriots committed ten penalties, and their defense missed 16 total tackles. A number like that is almost impossible to overcome against a team as balanced as the Bears.

New England came in riding a three-game winning streak over the Bills, Raiders and Jets. That streak is now over. At 4-3, the Patriots face hard questions about their defensive discipline heading into the second half of the season. Their next game, a trip to New Orleans to face the Saints on Sunday, now feels like a must-win.

End Of My Bears Vs Patriots Rant

Two quarterbacks picked back-to-back in the 2024 NFL Draft. Nearly identical stats. One interception. That is the Bears vs Patriots story in a sentence. Williams was sensational all night — not because his numbers were flashier than Maye’s, but because he protected the ball in a six-point game when one mistake was all it would take to change everything. Drake Maye made that mistake. Caleb Williams did not. In the NFL, that is usually the whole story.
