Atletico Madrid has recently left the Champions League after their defeat against Real Madrid. There was a lot of controversy around this as Julián Álvarez’s penalty was disallowed. Four Atletico Madrid fan groups plan to sue UEFA over the penalty controversy.

What Happened?

In the Champions League’s round of 16, Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the first leg. When it was time for the second leg, Atletico Madrid equalized, sending the game to penalties.

During the shootout, Álvarez’s penalty went inside the net, but VAR disallowed it. VAR then claimed that the striker slipped and touched the ball twice, which isn’t allowed. Real Madrid went on to win with a 4-2 result on penalties.

What Did UEFA Say?

According to ESPN, UEFA soon released a statement to respond to Atletico Madrid’s outrage over the disallowed penalty. It stated:

“Atlético Madrid consulted UEFA about the incident which led to Julián Álvarez’s penalty being disallowed. Although it was minimal, the player made contact with the ball with his supporting foot before shooting, as the video shows. Under the current rules, VAR had to call the referee to indicate that the goal should be ruled out. UEFA will initiate conversations with FIFA and IFAB to determine if the rules should be revised in cases where the double touch is clearly accidental.”

Atletico Madrid Fans Suing UEFA

This statement does not seem convincing enough for Atletico Madrid’s fan groups. According to ESPN, the groups “commissioned an expert report” that questions the video evidence UEFA relies on in its explanation. They also claimed that the video had been edited.

In a statement that is now deleted, Atlético’s International Union of Fan Clubs, Los 50, Senado Atletico, and Señales de Humo decided to “jointly commence legal proceedings against UEFA.” The statement read as follows:

“It was agreed, as an initial measure, to create a working group made up of renowned, prestigious lawyers, who will be responsible for designing the appropriate legal strategy to file the relevant complaint as soon as possible,” the statement said. We want to publicly thank fan groups, club members and fans for the support shown for the idea of defending the dignity and values which our club’s history represents.”

There Is No Right Or Wrong

People have been divided on whether Álvarez’s penalty should have been disallowed. Of course, Atletico Madrid fans will see that it wasn’t fair. On the other hand, Real Madrid’s fans agree with UEFA.

The fan groups are allowed to fight for their team if they believe they were mistreated. This is part of the beauty of soccer where fans’ passion for their team can make them go to extraordinary lengths.

End Of My Atletico Madrid Rant

I honestly think that this lawsuit won’t be fruitful. The match has ended and Real Madrid advanced. So it is almost impossible that UEFA will change their mind now.
