Arsenal’s record in the UEFA Champions League is not the best of any English club. They have never won the European Cup. However, despite this, Arsenal have been among the most consistent English clubs to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Before the UEFA Champions League, Arsenal had made precious little impact in the former European Cup. Only a few times had Arsenal played in the European Cup, and so they never made a big impact in it.
Arsenal’s Mixed Champions League Fortunes
However, Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League in most seasons since their first Premiership title win in 1998. They made their Champions League debut in 1998. This first attempt in the Champions League was disappointing as the club did not get beyond the first round. Indeed, their second attempt was little better as the team finished third in their group and so went out in the group stages again.
The season of 2000 proved to be a different story. Arsenal cruised through the first group stage with three wins and a draw. In the second round, they lost 4-1 to Spartak Moscow, but a win against Lyon set them up to finish in the top two of the group. They progressed to the quarter-finals for the first time, where they were drawn against Valencia. A 2-1 home win was not enough for Arsenal, as Valencia’s 1-0 victory in the return leg put them through.
In the following season, Arsenal blew hot and cold in the UEFA Champions League. This was most notable in their home and away form as they struggled to get points away from Highbury. Overall, there were some impressive home wins which saw them progress into the 2nd round. Then, a 3-1 victory against Juventus and a 4-1 against Leverkusen in the second round. However, this was enough to get to the quarter-finals after Deportivo’s 2-0 victory.
It was a fairly similar story in 2003. A great start saw Arsenal top their first group. Then, however, in the second round, Arsenal could not find their top form. With just one 3-1 victory in the 2nd round, they could not progress.
A bad start in the following UEFA Champions League was not enough to put Arsenal out of their group, with two defeats in their first three games. Arsenal recovered with three victories, including a fine 5-1 victory over Inter Milan to put them through to the 2nd round. In the knock-outs, Celta Vigo were defeated before the all-London quarter-final clash with Chelsea. However, Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal put them out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.
The 2006 Champions League Campaign
With the team going out in the 2nd round the season before, 2006 was the season that Arsenal made their biggest impact in the UEFA Champions League. As usual, the Gunners eased through the first round and finished top of their group. Then, in the 2nd round, they played Real Madrid and gained a fine 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu. A 0-0 draw in the return leg took them into the quarter-finals. Italian giants Juventus waited in the quarter-finals, and a 2-0 win at Highbury gave Arsenal the advantage for the return leg, which remained goalless.
For the first time, Arsenal were in the semi-finals and their 1-0 win against Valencia got them through to their first final. Against Barcelona in the final, the sending off of their keeper left them a man short for most of the game. In the end, they lost 2-1 after going a goal up.
This remains Arsenal’s best campaign in the UEFA Champions League. Since then, Arsenal have reached the 2nd round eight times, the semi-finals twice, and the quarter-finals on three occasions. The Gunners reached the semi-finals in their most recent 2025 Champions League campaign, which was their best attempt at winning the tournament since 2006.
Can Arsenal Ever Win the Champions League?
First, it’s worth noting Arsenal have won the Champions League not once but twice. The Arsenal women’s team is the current Champions League holders after their 1-0 victory against Barcelona in the final. The Gunners also won UEFA’s flagship tournament in the women’s game in 2007.
If Arsenal’s women can win the Champions League, the Gunners’ male team should be able to do the same. As one of the big hitters in the Premiership, Arsenal have the financial clout to win the men’s Champions League. Deloitte’s financial analysis ranked Arsenal seventh for 2024 financial revenue, ahead of the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and AC Milan.
Yet, Arsenal are still missing something on the pitch for Champions League glory, much the same as in the Premiership. The Gunners lack a consistent goal scorer and strength in depth up front. Arsenal had to play Mikel Merinho as a makeshift striker during the 2025 campaign to fill the gaps in their forward line.
If Arsenal can remedy their shortcomings up front this summer, they could have every chance of Champions League glory in 2026. Arsenal is reputedly very close to signing the forwards Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres at the time of writing. The prolific Viktor Gyokeres, who has scored 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting Lisbon, could be just the sort of striker Arsenal need.
End of My Arsenal Champions League Record Rant
Arsenal’s historic Champions League record is generally one of a second-round and quarter-final team, as they’ve only reached the semis three times. However, Arsenal are currently among the best sides in Europe again. So, UEFA Champions League glory is seemingly a realistic possibility for Arsenal in the next few years if the Gunners sign some more serious firepower.
