In one of the biggest NHL trades in recent history, Mikko Rantanen is on the move in an absolute shocker move. The key moves are the Colorado Avalanche moving the superstar winger to the Carolina Hurricane in exchange for their breakout center and receiving Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Colorado Avalanche: Making Big Moves

The Avalanche have decided to shock the hockey world, initiating a three-team trade. The teams involved are the Avs, Hurricanes, and Blackhawks. Mikko Rantanen, the Avs leading goal scorer, is the main piece of the trade. The 28-year-old winger is in the final year of his contract and will enter free agency next year as an unrestricted free agent unless he resigns from Carolina. The Avalanche received a hefty return, namely, Martin Necas from the Hurricanes. The center has broken out this year, leading his former team in points, and will fill Rantanen’s shoes quite nicely.
Additionally, the Avs will acquire Jack Drury, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Hurricanes. While not a significant contributor, Drury should play a solid role in depth for Colorado. Overall, this trade makes sense for the Avalanche, who likely wouldn’t be able to resign Rantanen due to cap restraints. The Necas and Drury package should prove to be a good deal for all teams involved.
Carolina Hurricanes: Are Going All In

The Hurricanes are officially going all in for the Stanley Cup. This is one of the biggest moves made in franchise history, acquiring one of the league’s best wingers. The Cane’s are viewing this year as their year, as there is a reality where they only have Rantanen for the rest of this season.
General Manager Eric Tulsky is not unfamiliar with making big trade deadline moves. Last year, the team acquired Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the Cane’s, as they fell to the New York Rangers in the second round last year. Hopefully, this time around, it will be enough to push Carolina over the edge and help them win their first cup since 2006.
Taylor Hall is the second part of this package to Carolina. Hall comes from Chicago, and while not a significant piece, he will still fit nicely into a middle-six and veteran role. The former Hart winner has nine goals and 24 points through 46 games this year. Getting both Rantanen and Hall should make Carolina a scary team to play come the postseason.
Chicago Blackhawks: Get Great Value

The Chicago Blackhawks are the third and final team involved in this massive three-team trade. Their role in the trade is to give up Taylor Hall and retain 50% of Mikko Rantanen’s contract for Carolina. For this, the Blackhawks will get their third-round pick back from the Hurricanes. This trade makes a lot of sense for Chicago; they get rid of a 33-year-old Hall and his contract in return for a third-round pick. Retaining Rantannen’s contract won’t have much effect, as his deal is up at the end of this season.
End Of My NHL Trade Rant
This trade makes a ton of sense for all three teams involved. While it is difficult to determine who will benefit from this trade most, initial reactions are always important. For the Colorado Avalanche, I grade this trade a B+. While Necas is a great player, Rantanen has been a proven superstar for the Avs.
The two picks could also provide some solid value, given good drafting. The Carolina Hurricanes get an A-; this is their year to go all in, with the East looking more open than most years. Rantanen and Hall should be crucial pieces to a deep run. Finally, the Blackhawks get an A. They didn’t lose or gain much, but getting a third-round pick is always lovely.
