FC Barcelona was looking at a promising season long before they embarked on their mission to sign new talent to help them bring glory back to Catalunya. With many of their players coming off the high of winning the World Cup and with the 25/26 league title in their pocket, team spirit was high, and prospects were good. Once the new season began, it quickly became clear that all the fans’ prayers for a year to remember were not whispered in vain.
Barcelona came into the 2026/27 season in high spirits, having completed one worth remembering only a few months before. They won La Liga with ten points to spare, crushing Real Madrid’s dreams of a return to its top. Although they exited after the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, they did win another Spanish competition, taking home the crown of the Supercopa de España. Their campaign in the Champions League was also admirable, although it only got them to the quarter-finals, in which they lost to Atlético Madrid.
16 of the team’s players went on to represent their countries during the 2026 World Cup. Eight of them lifted the trophy on July 19th. By all metrics, Barcelona’s 2025/26 season was one to remember.
Of course, the past is in the past, and in the world of football, all that matters is the present. Luckily for Barcelona, it is also looking bright. They have won all four league games, becoming the only La Liga not to lose a point thus far. Their victories were all quite dominant, with scores ranging from 2:0 to 5:0.
On Wednesday, Barcelona have also had their first chance to show where they stand in the Champions League. They won 5:1 against Feyenoord Rotterdam, easily securing their first three points of the competition. Just like in La Liga, the victory came easy and was carried out in a well-controlled manner.
The current FC Barcelona is a well-oiled machine. New players, such as Anthony Gordon or Karim Adeyemi, have seamlessly adapted to the team and add value to every game they are a part of. The players who shone in the previous seasons, with Lamine Yamal at the helm, still give their all on the field and produce football that is simply fun to watch.
What is important to the fans is that Barcelona is very consistent. They don’t play one incredible match only to rest on their laurels and struggle in the next; instead, they carry that momentum into every meeting on their calendar. This much was noted by the team’s coach, Hansi Flick:
“It’s good to see that we make changes and the team maintains its standard. That’s good news for us (…) I think we’ve done well in the first five matches; we’ve scored plenty of goals and we’re playing as a team, as a unit.”
At the same time, he acknowledged that Barcelona still has areas for improvement and that he intends to push the players to fully realise their potential:
“We can improve, and that’s what we have to aim for: high intensity in training, maintaining a competitive edge, seeing where we can improve and staying focused on that. We’re demanding the very best.”
The season looks very promising to all those who support FC Barcelona, although it is, of course, too early to call for any celebrations. The team is infamous for following good periods with unfortunate slumps in performance, as could be seen even in the 2025/26 season. So far, however, they show no signs of stopping.
