With the 2026 NFL season set to kick off on Wednesday, speculation season is coming to an end. We’ve seen NFL power rankings all offseason for different position groups. Now, we turn our attention to defenses. Based on last year’s success and offseason upgrades, here are the top 10 defenses ahead of the 2026 season.
The Buccaneers ranked 19th in total yards allowed per game last year (337.2). They also ranked 20thin points allowed per game (24.2) and 15th in third-down success (39.5%).
Tampa’s biggest weakness has been at edge rusher. After Rueben Bain Jr. fell to them in the NFL Draft, he joins Yaya Diaby and Vita Vea in the trenches. The Miami product was destructive in college but fell due to his arm length.
The Bucs’ defense has the potential to be game-wrecking. The secondary is now without Jamel Dean, but the rest of the group is full of talent. If Bain can live up to his pre-draft hype, this unit will rank among the NFL’s best.
The Jaguars’ ascent last season was swift and surprising. Liam Coen’s first year as head coach started rocky, but the offense quickly picked things up. The same can be said for their defense.
Through the last eight weeks of the season, Jacksonville’s defense allowed a league-low 14.5 points per game. Across the entire season, they allowed 19.8 points per game, ranking eighth in the NFL.
The Jags’ 2025 second-overall pick, Travis Hunter, is now primarily moving to cornerback. This will be the second year under defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile as well. With a growing system and more consistency, this unit will continue to surprise in 2026.
The Patriots’ turnaround in 2025 was special to watch. The development of QB Drake Maye, the arrival of head coach Mike Vrabel, and the culture shift were a sight to behold. What’s easy to forget is how good their defense was.
New England ranked ninth in pass yards (193.5), sixth in rush yards (101.7), and fourth in points allowed per game (18.8). Milton Williams shined in the trenches while Christian Gonzalez blanketed receivers all season.
The Pats added LB Dre’Mont Jones and safety Kevin Byard to their defense. They’re entering year two with Vrabel and DC Terrell Williams. This group will continue to grow and climb the NFL power rankings.
The beauty of the Vikings’ defense lies in schematics. DC Brian Flores just signed a contract extension, earning more than $6 million per year. The defense isn’t loaded with “superstar” names. The magic lies within Flores’ game plan.
Flores has a knack for exploiting offensive weaknesses and putting his players in perfect positions to succeed. The unit struggled against the run, ranking 21st in rush yards allowed per game (124.1). They’re now without Jonathan Greenard on the edge as well.
Flores can seemingly make anything work. The Vikings’ DC will continue to put his players in advantageous positions. No matter how much Minnesota’s offense struggles, the defense has proven it can carry plenty of weight.
It might be easy to expect the Chargers’ defense to regress without DC Jesse Minter. The Baltimore Ravens’ new head coach led the fifth-ranked unit in total yards allowed per game (285.2). He’s replaced by Western Michigan’s former coordinator, Chris O’Leary.
O’Leary spent 2024 with LA as its safeties coach. He worked closely with Minter during that time and will be extremely familiar with what led to such success.
Similar to Flores, Minter elevated a group with few household names. CB Derwin James and LB Khalil Mack led a talented group. They’re joined by DT Dalvin Tomlinson and first-round rookie edge rusher Akheem Mesidor. O’Leary has talent to work with, and his familiarity will keep this group among the NFL’s best.
Some defenses succeed despite a lack of star power; the Eagles do not fall in that category. Cooper DeJean, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Zack Baun, and Quinyon Mitchell lead a loaded defense in 2026.
Last year, Philly ranked fifth in points allowed per game (19.1) and 13th in total yards allowed per game (314.2). Their struggles came in the secondary. Behind DeJean and Mitchell, their lack of depth was apparent.
The Eagles addressed their secondary depth by acquiring Super Bowl LX champion Riq Woolen. They also signed Jonathan Jones and strengthened the defensive line with Jonathan Greenard. This is a Super Bowl-caliber team for many reasons, and the defense is at the forefront.
The Broncos’ defense has risen to the top of NFL power rankings over the last two years. On a per-game basis in 2025, they ranked second in total yards allowed (278.2), seventh in pass yards allowed (187.2), second in rush yards allowed (91.1), and third in points allowed (18.3).
Denver lost pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers this offseason. The latter accounted for 7.5 of the team’s league-leading 68 sacks.
The Broncos showed cracks late in the offseason, but found their footing in the playoffs. If not for QB Bo Nix breaking his ankle in the Divisional round, they had a real shot at winning Super Bowl LX. They’ll still dominate, but the absence of Franklin-Myers will show in the trenches.
Ranking the Seahawks third on this list may be unpopular, considering they’re the Super Bowl champions. They led the league in points allowed per game (17.2) and defensive third-down rate (32.1%). The reason they’re here is due to key departures and additions to the teams ahead of them.
Seattle lost safety Coby Bryant, CB Riq Woolen, and LB Boye Mafe in the offseason. While that won’t completely derail Mike MacDonald’s defense, it will certainly be felt.
There’s little reason to believe the Seahawks’ “Dark Side” defense will see a sharp decline. They’ll still be a dominant force in 2026, but the two above them have more star power.
While it may be premature to put the Rams this high on an NFL power ranking, they’re the Super Bowl favorites for a reason. They ranked 17th in total yards allowed per game (327.5) and 10th in points allowed per game (20.4).
Los Angeles saw its defensive holes and made aggressive moves. They acquired reigning DPOY Myles Garrett and former first-team All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie. Adding two of the best players at their respective positions is game-changing.
To make matters scarier, the Rams’ legendary defensive lineman Aaron Donald is back from retirement. This defense was already skilled enough, but now has gone over the top. With arguably the best offense in the NFL, this team should dominate.
The Texans’ defense led the league in total yards allowed per game (277.2) in 2025. On a per-game basis, they also ranked sixth in pass yards allowed (183.5), fourth in rush yards allowed (93.7), and second in points allowed (17.4).
Houston drafted Ohio State’s standout defensive tackle Kayden McDonald 36th overall. They also acquired safety Reed Blankenship and brought back edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
The Texans’ offensive struggles have held them from winning a Super Bowl. The defense, on the other hand, is championship caliber. Head coach Demeco Ryans’ hard-hitting unit has only improved in 2026, and the production will show it.
The 2026 NFL season is upon us, and these defenses will finally show why they made the top 10 on my NFL power rankings. With Super Bowl aspirations, the Rams are the biggest name to watch in 2026.
