Marcus Rashford‘s Manchester United return could be about more than simply giving the forward another chance at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick is confirming Rashford will link up with the squad for their pre-season training camp in Ireland. Rashford could also give United something they’ve struggled to consistently produce: a direct attacking threat from the left.
Rashford isn’t guaranteed to become the player he once was. If Carrick can get him firing again, though, United may have found an attacking solution without needing to look elsewhere.
This isn’t an argument that United have no attacking threat — Carrick has options up front. The club has lacked a consistent, proven source of direct running, pace and one-on-one threat from a wide position. It needs the kind of player who can carry the ball 40 yards and create something out of nothing.
Rashford isn’t a player returning from nearly two years of inactivity. After being frozen out under former manager Ruben Amorim, Rashford spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, then moved to Barcelona for the full 2025/26 campaign.
Rashford finished the season with 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions as Barcelona won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, before the club opted not to trigger his £26 million permanent option.
At his best, Rashford offers pace in behind a defense, direct ball-carrying, and the ability to isolate and beat full-backs, and goals from wide areas. These are all qualities Barcelona got real use out of last season, even if it wasn’t enough to convince them to make the move permanent.
The more interesting question isn’t whether Rashford can simply reclaim his old position. Instead, it’s how Carrick uses Rashford alongside United’s newer attacking options, which now include Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo. None of those three offer quite the same profile.
Cunha operates best by dropping into pockets and combining centrally. Mbeumo is more of an inside forward looking to cut in and shoot, and Amad’s game is built on close control and combination play in tight areas.
Rashford is different. His value comes in running in behind rather than dropping short, and in beating a full-back one-on-one rather than combining his way past him.
Rashford’s directness matters tactically because it stretches an opposition’s back line vertically. It pins defenders deep while opening the half-spaces underneath for Cunha or Amad to operate in, and gives Carrick an out-ball to attack in behind when the buildup is pressed.
Rashford doesn’t have to be the focal point of the attack. He could instead be the player who receives the ball wide, carries it at a defense, beats his man, and creates space for United’s central forwards to work in.
If Carrick genuinely believes Rashford can contribute at this level, it changes the calculation on United’s summer business. The club had been looking to add another versatile forward, partly because Joshua Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain. A fully reintegrated Rashford reduces the urgency to spend heavily in that area before the transfer window closes.
Rashford’s arrival doesn’t mean United should abandon the market entirely. It means Rashford gives it another option to lean on before committing more money.
Rashford’s return doesn’t work if United is hoping for the player he was three years ago to reappear because he’s back at Carrington.
Rashford has to show he can maintain consistency. He must fit into Carrick’s system, contribute his share defensively, and reproduce the kind of output he managed at Barcelona. He also must show he wants to rebuild his career at Old Trafford rather than treat this as a stopgap.
The shirt-number situation is a small but telling signal of where things stand. His old No. 10 has already gone to Cunha, and Rashford is set to wear No. 14 instead, the number he wore on loan at Barcelona. This is a fresh start, not a return to the old status quo.
Manchester United has very little to lose by testing this out in pre-season. If Rashford performs, Carrick has gained a genuinely dangerous forward option without spending a transfer fee. If he doesn’t, United can still go into the market before the window shuts.
Manchester United doesn’t need Rashford to become the player he was three years ago. They simply need him to become useful again.

If Carrick can unlock his pace, directness and ability to carry the ball, Rashford could give United an attacking weapon they would otherwise have to spend heavily to find. His return may not be Manchester United’s problem. It could be one of their solutions.
