These WWE SmackDown results are from the stop in Oakland, California this week. It would also be the second-to-last episode before the special two-night SummerSlam PLE in Minneapolis, Minnesota. New matches were announced, and personal storylines continued to develop in the following recap.
These WWE SmackDown results open with general manager Nick Aldis and Raw general manager Adam Pearce in the ring for a contract signing. After various confrontations over the last few weeks, Aldis is challenging “The Ring General” Gunther to a grudge match at SummerSlam. Pearce announced a GM cannot wrestle its own talent, and that he’s giving up his job to do so. That said, no hesitation was shown.
Gunther was quick to oblige, coming to the ring and signing the contract. He also told Aldis it’ll just be another name in the list of careers he’s ended, a list that contains John Cena, AJ Styles, and Goldberg.
Aldis called Gunther, amongst other things not suitable for this article, afraid of him. The brawl was on, with The Ring General getting the better of his SummerSlam opponent, ultimately powerbombing him through a table.
WWE Hall of Famer Brie Bella, with Paige, vs. Lainey Reed, accompanied by the rest of Fatal Influence, was next. Bella and Paige recently dropped the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship to them, leading to this fallout singles match.
The match itself was slow and lackluster, with Bella picking up the pin with a basic roll-up. Fatal Influence played their three-on-two advantage after the bell, but were met with the surprise return of WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella. The trio powered through as a six-woman tag match was announced for SummerSlam.
Chelsea Greene and Kiana James had a singles match, with a shot in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match at SummerSlam on the line. James asserted her strength for an early advantage, but the two never seemed to get on the same page. The segments were choppy, and the moves looked fake. Greene picked up the pinfall victory.
“The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes was up next, with an in-ring promo. He called his SummerSlam opponent, Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk, to join him. Rhodes came out and said it: “I don’t like you.” This segment was drawn out far too long, especially considering they didn’t say anything noteworthy.
Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax had a qualifier match of their own in these WWE SmackDown results. Flair was ultimately distracted by Jade Cargill, B-Fab, and Michin while climbing to the top rope, presumably for a moonsault for the finish. Flair tried to fight them off while keeping the match alive, but the referee had no choice. Jax was actually disqualified for this, putting her opponent in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match at SummerSlam.
The next match was a fatal four-way featuring one-half of the WWE Tag Team Champions Damian Priest, Royce Keys, Finn Balor, and WWE United States Champion Trick Williams. The winner advances to face Sami Zayn in a number one contender’s match at SummerSlam. Solo Sikoa was quick to appear ringside, but he was attacked by The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso). LA Knight came to take care of them, as the match continued. Keys appeared to have the match won when he was attacked by “The Samoan Werewolf” Jacob Fatu. Balor navigated through the chaos to pull out the important victory in these WWE SmackDown results.
