The Philadelphia Eagles will begin their training camp on Tuesday, July 28th. In the meantime, let’s start looking at the overall roster and what could happen once this process is complete. Today we will look at 20 players who are right on the Eagles roster bubble, needing big performances to get a spot on the 53-man roster.
Elijah Mitchell has had success in the NFL when playing for the San Francisco 49ers. He had 963 rushing yards during the 2021 season. His lack of experience on special teams may hurt his chances of making the roster.
Carson Steele could function as a FB in the Eagles system if they opt to go that way under Sean Mannion. He has faced fumbling issues in his career, something to watch throughout the preseason.
Dameon Pierce has the most versatility from the group of RBs on the bubble. Still, his skill set may overlap with Will Shipley, who’s already expected to make the roster. Maybe if Pierce outperforms him, he’ll make the roster.
Darius Cooper was an undrafted free agent who made the 53-man roster out of preseason last year. He didn’t contribute much (9 rec, 92 yds), but clearly the organization likes him. He’ll have to beat out a mix of younger players and veterans to make the roster.
Johnny Wilson is a 6’7 receiver entering year three, who has not contributed on offense yet. He does bring some value as a blocker with his size, but he continues being pushed down the depth chart. It may come down to him vs Cooper for the last receiver spot, where I’d expect Wilson to have the advantage.
Elijah Moore was signed before the AJ Brown trade was completed, likely to provide extra bodies at the position through camp. Philadelphia has added a ton of WR depth since then. It’s tough to see him sticking on the roster even with his experience and NFL success. It may take an injury to another receiver for him to make the roster.
Britain Covey is always a wild card at this time of the year. He is without a doubt the best returner they have rostered, but sometimes that’s not enough to take up a roster spot. His situation is connected more to Pierce and Shipley than other WRs. It’s a battle for the special teams spot.
Grant Calcaterra may be on his way out after a few decent years as the primary backup to Dallas Goedert. They drafted Eli Stowers in the second round and have added multiple blocking TEs, primarily Johnny Mundt, who will take Calcaterra’s spot. Tough to see a path to the roster unless they carry four TEs.
Myles Hinton is fighting for the fourth tackle spot on the roster, if they opt to carry that many. A practice squad stay may be the route the Eagles go here for the former sixth-round pick.
Cameron Williams is in the same spot as Hinton when it comes to the spot he’s fighting for. His potential seems much greater than Hinton, so keeping him on the roster may be safer than making him available for other teams to claim him.
Micah Morris was the sixth-round pick in Philadelphia this past NFL draft. He will battle a few other players who haven’t played a snap of NFL football for the third guard spot.
Willie Lampkin, same as Morris, is fighting for the third guard spot without stepping foot on an NFL field in the regular season. He was claimed off waivers last season after being let go by the Los Angeles Rams.
Ty Robinson was their third-round pick just last season, and he hasn’t already fallen onto the roster bubble. The position group is so deep that it makes it hard for someone even as valuable as he is to make the roster. He’ll need to outperform Byron Young for the DT4 spot on the 53-man.
Gabe Hall is in the exact same scenario as Robinson. He probably would make the roster if the depth wasn’t so impressive. What happens now? He probably finds himself among the cuts at the very end of the preseason. They will try to get him on the practice squad, but don’t be surprised if a team steals him.
Kelee Ringo has had a very disappointing run since being drafted by Philadelphia. He hasn’t been able to turn himself into a reliable CB and has only been able to make a name for himself on defense. He is a prime cut/trade candidate entering camp.
Jakorian Bennett was acquired last season from the Las Vegas Raiders with hopes of providing key depth to the CB position. That was not the case, and the position is blocked due to the additions of Tariq Woolen and Jonathan Jones.
Mac McWilliams needs to be very impressive throughout the preseason to make the roster. He’s still very young, but his versatility is limited to just the slot cornerback position. They now have multiple players who could slide over into the slot, making McWilliams expendable. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to sneak him into the practice squad.
Michael Carter’s slot on the roster all depends on how well he can shift over to safety. If he performs well at the new position, then there is no doubt he makes the roster. His versatility should be enough to keep him around regardless.
Cole Wisniewski was a seventh-round pick by the Eagles this April. He will be battling for position in the weak safety room. Two more names to watch in a similar position are UDFAs Maximus Pulley and Kapena Gushiken.
Andre Sam is one of the best special teams players on the roster, but that hasn’t helped him make the initial roster in the past. He typically begins the year on the practice squad and is elevated when needed. I’d expect that to be the case again this year.
The Eagles have put together some impressive depth all around the roster this offseason. Some of these moves won’t come easy, but they have to cut down to 53. Tough decisions are on the way for Howie Roseman and the Eagles front office.
