The USA vs Canada rivalry will add another chapter Friday night when the teams meet in the 2026 World Baseball Classic quarterfinal in Houston.

For the third time in less than a month, the United States and Canada will wage battle in an international sporting event. This time, the contest will be on the baseball diamond at Daikin Park.

The Canadians will attempt to stem the tide of recent American dominance. In February’s Winter Olympics, the men’s and women’s gold medal hockey games both saw the United States emerge victorious in overtime.

For those unaware of Team Canada’s roster and history, here is a preview of both teams to get you ready for Friday night’s elimination game.

Canada’s MLB Talent Could Challenge Team USA

Team Canada surfaced as the winner of Pool A play in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and advanced to the “knockout” round for the first time. The Canadians defeated Cuba, 7-2, on Wednesday to complete their round-robin play at 3-1. Puerto Rico, which also finished the week at 3-1, finished second based on their loss to Canada on Tuesday.

After defeating Colombia 8-2 in their opening contest, Canada fell to Panama, 4-3, in their second game. The Canadians turned away pool-A host Puerto Rico before clinching their spot in the next round against Cuba.

Pitching has carried the Canadians thus far. Through their four pool-play games, their team’s ERA is a stingy 1.54. Those registering wins were the Texas Rangers’ Cal Quantrill, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Michael Soroka, and MLB-free agent Jordan Balazovic.

At the plate, Owen Caissie, who currently plays for the Miami Marlins, leads the team in hitting with a .500 average. Caissie owns one of Team Canada’s two home runs, and he is tied for the team lead in RBI with five. Current Kansas City Royal Abraham Toro owns the other homer and also has five runs knocked in.

With their recent baseball prosperity, Toro believes this is the pick-me-up his country needs to grow the sport.

“Canada is definitely a country that is slept on,” he said at the podium. “I just think that [Canadian baseball] is going to continue to grow, and hopefully we can be an inspiration for a younger generation.”

Canada’s rise is not terribly surprising. The roster features 21 players who are either current Major League players or have previous MLB playing experience.

Canadian Manager Ernie Whitt, who played 15 MLB seasons, has led his country’s team in 18 separate international competitions. During his tenure, Whitt has compiled a 74-37 record, which has included contests in the Pan Am Games, the Olympics, and WBSC Baseball World Cups.

Whitt feels his current club has what it takes to make a run at the WBC crown.

“This roster reflects the growth and strength of baseball in Canada,” he said. “Every opportunity to manage Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic is incredibly special, and I’m honored to once again lead this group. There’s a competitive edge, experience, and pride throughout this roster, and we’re excited about the challenge ahead.”

While Whitt has yet to name a starting pitcher for the game against Team USA, he certainly has plenty of options. In addition to the three who won games recently, a rested Jameson Taillon has only pitched 3.2 innings thus far and owns a wealth of MLB experience. In addition, the pitch limit bumps up to 80 in the quarterfinal round, which Whitt could use to keep the American lineup off-balance.

In their first-ever meeting in the World Baseball Classic in 2006, Canada shocked the United States 8–6. The Americans have won the last four, including a 12-1 thrashing in their most recent battle in 2023.

End Of My Canada Rant: This Is Not Your Father’s Canadian Team

Because of the big-league experience owned by members of their roster, Canada’s chances of beating the Americans on Friday are as strong as they have ever been. A Canadian victory would not send the shockwaves felt from their win in the 2006 WBC.

Not only that, but do not underestimate the effect that the Olympic hockey tournament had on Canada. There would be nothing greater to those in the Great White North than avenging Jack Hughes’ “Golden Goal” by beating the United States on the diamond.

Just like on the ice in Milan last month, the playing surface in Houston will be filled with elite talent. The odds of the United States overlooking its neighbors to the north are minuscule, but anything can happen during the course of a nine-inning game.
