University of Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Cutter Boley is searching for a new team after entering the transfer portal Thursday afternoon. A Lexington Christian high school product, Boley spent two years playing in Lexington and was named the starter this season after three games.
This past season was full of firsts for Boley. He broke the Kentucky freshman record for completion percentage in a season. He set the single-season freshman record for touchdown passes against SEC opponents with 12. Boley notched his freshman record with five touchdown passes in a game against the Tennessee Volunteers.
Boley earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors in three consecutive games and landed a spot on the All-SEC Freshman Team. At Kentucky, he totaled 2,160 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. This stings a bit, given his love for the state and the fact that he’s a Kentucky native, but Will Stein will have plenty of options to find the next quarterback to take the reins.

Now it’s a waiting game to see what the Wildcats will target next with the quarterback situation still up in the air. One name that’s surfaced recently is Austin Novosad, an Oregon transfer with strong ties to Stein. A former top-15 QB out of high school, it’s possible Kentucky could pursue him now that Boley has entered the portal.
Josh Hoover, the former TCU quarterback now in the transfer portal, has been linked to the Indiana Hoosiers, Louisville Cardinals, and Kentucky. With 9,629 passing yards and 71 touchdowns in his career, he’s one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in this cycle, and the Wildcats are showing strong interest in bringing him on board.
Another option could be James Madison Dukes quarterback Alonzo Barnett III. He threw for 2,806 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air, showcasing one of his best skills, but he’s also a reliable runner. Barnett rushed for 589 yards and scored 15 touchdowns on the ground. He finished as the Dukes’ second-leading rusher and ranked among the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the portal.
Stein and the team will review all options while the portal remains open from January 2nd through January 16th.
The transfer portal is only the beginning, and Kentucky has already had several players enter. This won’t be the first or the last, and while some fans might overreact, trust in Coach Stein. The track record in player development, the talented athletes he’s coached, and the strong staff he’s assembled will make things work out as they should.
The college football landscape has shifted. Adding more assistants and analysts to work with the team, along with a general manager overseeing the entire operation, will put Kentucky in a strong position for the transfer portal. The connections they’ve built by offering four- and five-star prospects bode well for the program’s success moving forward.
Losing Boley to the transfer portal is a big blow, but in today’s era of college football, these things happen. His time in the blue and white was cut short, but fans can look back on the good moments and wish him the best wherever his path takes him.
