The latest episode of WWE Monday Night Raw featured the King of the Ring tournament semi-finals. The main event featured Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso battling for the right to face Randy Orton at Night of Champions. Both are recent champions and popular babyfaces, but only one could advance to become King of the Ring and number one contender.
There was a separation of in-ring talent, and it was clear only moments in. It was nice to see such a stiff collar and elbow, but that’s where it ended for Uso. The Samoan got outclassed in what appeared to be a genuine wrestling clinic against a close friend.
Despite Uso’s sloppy and limited moveset, the match had a natural back-and-forth. To his credit, the tag team specialist has elite ring IQ and was doing the best selling of his life for his shoot friend. The two shared an intimate moment post-match, but it was ultimately The American Nightmare advancing.
Saturday, at Night of Champions, two multi-generation wrestlers will decide who is the true King of the Ring. While Orton is superior in every aspect of wrestling, this is about the story. The Legend Killer has numerous championships over decades of work – a sure-fire Hall of Famer. As hot as Rhodes is, it’s only been a relatively short time since he’s been taken seriously.
Orton will put Rhodes over at Night of Champions – that’s a lock. It’s a logical and predictable decision. The new Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena, took the belt from him in April at WrestleMania, so a championship rematch is destiny. The American superhero needs to regain the title from the evil villain before Cena runs out of obligated appearances.
A loss for Rhodes would send him back to the midcard. It ruins the booking since his return and interrupts their story before the climax. It’s safe to expect the veteran to give his all in an attempt to launch the son of a Hall of Famer even further into superstardom.
