With only three La Liga matchdays remaining, the fans are getting closer and closer to seeing a team crowned the 2025 champions. There is a clear frontrunner, but the season is not over quite yet.

The Situation So Far

Throughout a big part of the season, as is often the case in La Liga, three teams remained close to the top of the standings. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid all had a good chance of finishing in the lead.

During Barcelona’s disappointing winter run, they fell below the two teams from Madrid and, for a while, seemed to be out of contention. They did what that team does best and came back stronger than ever, fighting their way back to the top of the leaderboards. A crucial moment in their comeback was the match against Atlético, which put them at 60 points and at the top of the standings. That same game was one of the hardest moments of the season for Atlético. After their loss, they fell behind both their main rivals and were unable to truly return to the fight for the La Liga crown.

Who Still Has The Chance?

With three La Liga matchdays to go, Barcelona is in the lead with 82 points to its name. They are followed by Real with 75 points and Atlético with 70. Atlético is out of the fight, since they would need to score 12 points in the remaining games to equal Barcelona. Of course, that is not possible. They will have to settle for a place at the podium.

After the most recent El Clásico, Barcelona’s lead over Real increased to seven points. While the loss did not completely crush Real’s hopes of winning the title, it did significantly decrease their chances. They would have to win all their remaining games and count on Barcelona losing all theirs, or losing two and drawing one. In that scenario, Real would finish with 84 points to Barcelona’s 82 or 83.

This is not impossible, but it is highly unlikely given Barca’s great form. Right now, only one game could separate the Catalan team from winning the La Liga. If they win their upcoming game against Espanyol, they will reach 85 points and become untouchable for Real or any other team.

Relegation Zone

On the other side of the standings, teams are fighting not to lose their place in La Liga. Real Valladolid is currently at the very bottom of the table with only 16 points. They will be relegated no matter the outcomes of their last three games. The other two teams currently in the relegation zone are Las Palmas and Leganes, but for them, the situation is not as straightforward.

Las Palmas currently has 32 points, while Leganes sits at 34. If the teams won their last three games, they could increase their totals to 41 and 43, which could put them a few places away from the bottom of the table. That is assuming that the other teams with less than 40 points would either lose or draw at least some of their games.

Deportivo Alavés, Sevilla, Girona, Espanyol, and Getafe are all still in danger of being relegated. A lot can change over the course of three games, and the situation is not as clear as it is on the other side of the La Liga standings.

End Of My La Liga Rant

The fight for the La Liga crown could end on May 15th, or it could go on for a few weeks longer. Both Barcelona and Real are eager to take the trophy home. With neither having to worry about the Champions League finals, they can focus only on their home championship.
