Barcelona are still not sure about their goalkeeper position despite having Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Wojciech Szczesny. The doubts surrounding what will happen next have led the team to eye Espanyol’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
It’s reasonable that Barcelona will be looking for new goalkeepers to bring into the mix. After all, it’s a position where nothing is guaranteed for the Spanish club.
Ter Stegen has just come back from an injury, but there is also the age element. He is 33 years old, which might be a little older than Barcelona’s goalkeeper aims. There is also the fact that Ter Stegen hasn’t been impressing fans that much. In the last couple of years, he committed several mistakes that are unforgettable to some.
On the other hand, Szczesny have been essential for the team this season. He, however, might not renew his contract. After all, he came back from retirement to join Barca and he might want to retire once again. He already shared that he still has to discuss the matter with his wife before making any decisions. So his position is unguaranteed.
According to AS, Barcelona is considering offering a summer deal for Garcia. Garcia is perfect for Barcelona, which is looking for a world-class goalkeeper. So far this season, his performance with Espanyol has been consistent.
The publication reported that Garcia has the most saves in La Liga this season. He is second among goalkeepers in Europe in terms of saves.
His age is also attracting attention not just from Barcelona, but from other clubs as well. At just 24 years old, he could be the youth solution the club is looking for.
Garcia’s talent has made him a target for several clubs, including Arsenal, which previously sent an offer for him. It was ultimately rejected.
While Espanyol has yet to accept any offer for Garcia, there is the release clause that some clubs might want to use.
Currently, his release clause is €25 million. If he, however, was called to the Spanish national team, the clause would increase to €30 million. Whether any club would be willing to pay that is yet to be seen.
If Barcelona wants to keep Hansi Flick’s vision for the club alive, it needs to bring in a new, young goalkeeper like Garcia.
He has already proved himself to be one of the best this season, so there is no doubt regarding his talent. If the club could seal the deal for him, they would take their team to another level.
Barcelona might need Garcia in the future to maintain their good performance. However, they are very close to winning the league with the goalkeepers they already have, so it won’t harm to bring someone younger.
