The 2025 NFL Draft is tomorrow, and instead of doing a final mock draft, let’s switch gears. Here are five predictions about the Lions.

1. Lions Trade Up In Round One

With very few holes to fill, the Lions have the luxury to focus on quality versus quantity. They have two Day Two picks, and it would not be surprising to see one or both of them included in a package deal to move up a few spots in the first.

2. They Wait To Draft A Defensive Lineman

The Lions’ biggest need is along the defensive line, particularly at pass rusher, but they don’t care about need. They love to draft the best player at the position. In the early 20s, top positional players like interior offensive lineman Grey Zabel, linebacker Jihaad Campbell, and safety Malaki Starks could all be available. They may take one of them instead of reaching for a second or third-tier defensive lineman, especially since several Day-Two edge prospects could make sense for them.

3. They Trade At Least One 2026 Draft Pick

Last year, the Lions were willing to trade future draft capital in the 2024 NFL Draft—they traded away their 2025 third and fourth-round picks in two separate draft-day trades. They will do the same thing this year. This future draft capital could be used to move up in the first round or to pick up another selection on Day Two or Day Three.

4. They Draft 3 Trench Players

While they may not draft a defensive lineman in Round One, the Lions will invest heavily in the trenches. They will draft at least one edge rusher, interior defensive lineman, and interior offensive lineman. This year could be very similar to 2022, when they spent their first three draft picks on offensive tackle Penei Sewell and defensive tackles Alim McNeil and Levi Owunzurike.

5. They Extend Aidan Hutchinson

This is technically not a draft prediction, but since it will occur during draft week, it warrants a spot on the list. In 2024, the Lions extended Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the days leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, and before the curtain closes on the 2025 NFL Draft, news will break that Hutchinson has agreed to an extension. Kerby Joseph is also up for an extension, and it will be interesting to see if he gets one.

End Of My Lions Rant

Don’t expect the Lions to follow the script in the 2025 NFL Draft. If history is any guide, at least one of these predictions could hit—and maybe even all five.
