WWE Backlash wrapped up Saturday night from the Enterprise Center, including the storyline between Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch. The winner of the match came as a surprise, and perhaps points in a new direction for the company. Who left St. Louis with the Women’s WWE Intercontinental Championship?

Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match At Backlash

The storyline leading up to the match faced heavy scrutiny. It included them winning the tag titles during Valkyria’s current run, only to lose them shortly after—prompting “The Man” to turn heel at her partner’s expense. For weeks, WWE struggled to manage both the Women’s Tag Team and Intercontinental title scenes.

With a surprise return and a heel turn against a fellow Dubliner, expectations were that Lynch was to go on a title run, elevating the relatively new championship. After WrestleMania 41 failed to feature a Women’s Intercontinental match, the former friends turned rivals battled for the title at Backlash.

For all of the deserved pushback over booking decisions, WWE merits credit for this decision. Instead of giving the title to Lynch to quickly elevate it via brand name appeal, they allowed the better wrestler to keep it. The name is great for Valkyria’s resume, and Lynch still helped elevate the title’s status. The company has hopefully learned from their mistakes, and will put talented workers over using this title.

After the company almost buried her championship, they saved Valykyria’s title run in the end.
