After months of speculation and anticipation, the Milwaukee Bucks finally traded franchise icon and future Hall of Famer Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Giannis, alongside backup center Bobby Portis, is heading to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal that includes four rotational players and multiple first- and second-round draft picks.
In return, the Bucks receive 2025 All-Star Tyler Herro along with young players Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis.
Like every blockbuster trade in professional sports, there are immediate winners and losers. However, the true impact of the deal may not be known for years.
In the short term, the Miami Heat are the clear winners of the trade.
By acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami has found its new franchise player following the departure of Jimmy Butler at the 2025 NBA trade deadline.

Whether Milwaukee ultimately wins this trade will depend on the development of the players and draft assets they acquired.
The Bucks used two of the draft picks from the trade to select Brayden Burries and Nate Ament in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Burries showed plenty of promise during NBA Summer League. His ability to consistently knock down open three-pointers gives Milwaukee hope that he can become an important piece of its rebuild.
Ament appears to be more of a long-term project after struggling to average double figures during Summer League play.
It will take several seasons before either player’s true value can be accurately measured.
The development of Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis will also play a significant role in determining the success of Milwaukee’s rebuild.
Ware and Jaquez Jr. have already demonstrated versatility on both ends of the floor, showing the ability to defend multiple positions while contributing offensively off the bench.

Tyler Herro now receives the opportunity to become the face of his hometown franchise.
A former NBA All-Star, Herro steadily improved throughout his time with the Miami Heat, evolving from Sixth Man of the Year into one of the team’s primary scoring options.

When those efforts failed, the situation reportedly damaged the relationship between Brown and the organization.

For Milwaukee, the answer won’t be determined overnight. The development of Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, Brayden Burries, and Nate Ament will ultimately decide whether the franchise successfully transitioned into its next era.
As for Boston, missing out on Giannis may have triggered a chain of events that ultimately cost the franchise Jaylen Brown.
Like most blockbuster trades, this deal won’t truly be judged until several seasons have passed. Only time will determine who ultimately benefited the most from one of the biggest moves of the 2026 NBA offseason.
