The New York Mets look abysmal right now. They just got swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend and were outscored 30-4 in the series. They look dead on both ends, but their starting pitching is the main issue. With injuries to Megill, Maenea, Senga, and Canning, they need starting pitching. Who better for the Mets to go out and get than former fan favorite Jacob DeGrom.
Mets fans were spoiled when it came to the likes of Jacob DeGrom. A 4-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year, and 2-time CY Young winner in his tenure with them, DeGrom looked like he would stay there his whole career. Sadly, in 2023, he decided to leave the Queens faithful for the Texas Rangers, ultimately winning a World Series with them in his first season.
While DeGrom has looked like his old self with the Rangers, posting an 8-2 record with a 2.08 ERA in 95.1 innings, the Rangers themselves haven’t lived up to the hype. They are a 41-42 team and don’t appear to be contenders for a title this season. Maybe they will think about selling at the deadline and possibly moving a guy like DeGrom to a playoff potential team.
The Mets cannot afford to keep starting pitchers like Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill when he returns, or Frankie Montas if they want to compete for a title this season. They are going to need to make moves, and bringing DeGrom in would bolster this rotation quite a bit. When Senga and Maenea come back into the mix, they can have a rotation of those two plus DeGrom, Holmes, and Peterson. Right there is a pretty solid rotation. The question is: what would a DeGrom trade look like?
With how good DeGrom has been this season, a hefty haul would have to be given up to get him back. It would probably take a few high-end prospects they have, which could include Jett Williams, Nolan McLean, or even a Brandon Sproat. While this trade isn’t likely to happen, it wouldn’t hurt the Mets to go out and talk to the Rangers and see what they think.
Whether this trade happens or not remains to be seen. Either way, the Mets need to be searching deep in the starting pitching market for a few starters, as this team right now just isn’t going to cut it. A DeGrom reunion back in Queens would certainly make a lot of Mets fans happy. Not only was he a fan favorite, but he would also be a huge help to this injury-riddled rotation.
