Morgan Rogers is on the verge of completing a £117 million move from Aston Villa to Chelsea after the Blues won the race for one of England’s brightest young talents.
The agreement was reached while Rogers was away with England at the World Cup. This was just days after he provided the cross for Anthony Gordon’s opening goal in the semifinal defeat to Argentina.
Chelsea have agreed a £117 million package with Aston Villa for Rogers, who is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months. A medical is scheduled for Monday before the transfer is officially announced.
The fee makes Morgan Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, though it falls short of the outright British transfer record.
That mark still belongs to Liverpool, who paid Newcastle £125 million for Alexander Isak last year.
Villa had reportedly wanted as much as £130 million to beat that record outright.
Chelsea’s £117 million settlement means Rogers lands as one of the most expensive British transfers ever, just not the single most expensive.
Arsenal made what’s been described as a “mega bid” for Rogers, with England teammate Declan Rice reportedly encouraging him to move to the Emirates. Sporting director Andrea Berta had identified the Aston Villa star as one of the club’s priority attacking targets.
Chelsea ultimately won the race after incoming manager Xabi Alonso personally spoke with Rogers about his plans for the club.
Those conversations reportedly proved decisive, convincing the England international that Stamford Bridge offered the better long-term project despite strong interest from Arsenal.
Chelsea’s tactical direction under Alonso also appears to have influenced the decision.
Throughout his time at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso built his side around a 3-4-2-1 base formation. That shifted into a 3-2-5 shape in possession, with two attacking midfielders operating just behind a central striker.
Rogers’s ability to play as a No. 10, left-sided attacker, or second striker fits that mold. It remains to be seen whether Alonso carries the exact same system into the Premier League.
Rogers’ ball-carrying ability, pressing intensity, and willingness to attack defenders one-on-one line up with the qualities Alonso has consistently demanded from his advanced attacking players.
Rather than being restricted to one position, Rogers is expected to rotate across several roles depending on the opposition.
Chelsea also offered Rogers a familiar face. The England international has maintained a close friendship with Cole Palmer since the pair progressed through Manchester City’s academy together, where neither man made a senior appearance before moving on.
Both have since become senior England internationals, and their relationship reportedly helped strengthen Chelsea’s appeal during negotiations.
Morgan Rogers’s journey to this deal has been anything but linear. A West Bromwich Albion academy product, he joined Manchester City but never made a senior appearance. He’s been rebuilding his career through loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth, and Blackpool before Middlesbrough signed him for £1.5 million.
Aston Villa then paid up to £15 million to sign him from Middlesbrough in February 2024.
Within two seasons, Rogers had established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking midfielders and played a key role in Villa’s run to the Champions League quarterfinals.
The transfer was effectively agreed while Rogers remained on international duty with England.
Only days before reports of Chelsea’s agreement emerged, he had registered an assist against Argentina in the World Cup semifinal.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, complete another outstanding piece of business. They turned a player signed for as little as £8 million into a fee nearly eight times that amount while continuing to manage Profit and Sustainability regulations.
With Morgan Rogers now expected to join Chelsea, Arsenal are expected to accelerate moves for alternative attacking options. This is including Julián Álvarez and Eli Junior Kroupi, while their interest in Bradley Barcola also remains alive.
For Chelsea, the deal gives Alonso an attacking piece already integrated into a title-chasing England squad.
