The Boston Red Sox’s 2025 playoff chances may very well be determined by how they play in June. The Sox are treading water at 32-36, and if they enter July below .500, they will very likely see themselves as sellers at the trade deadline on July 31. The 2025 Red Sox entered the season with high hopes of competing for a division title. Instead, they find themselves looking up from the bottom of the division, wondering what moves they need to make to get back into the race. What has gone wrong, and can it be fixed?

Capitalizing At Home

For the remainder of June, the Red Sox have nine home games and nine away games. Those nine at home are critically important. The Sox will get three at home with the Rays, Yankees, and Blue Jays each. Realistically, they need to win six of those nine to stay in the fight, but ideally, they need to sweep a couple of those series. This is a tall task for a team that can’t seem to buy a winning streak, but not impossible.

The Red Sox will need to play .500 ball on the road for the rest of the month as well. This may be an easier task for the 2025 edition of the Red Sox, as young squads often seem to play better away from the home pressures. No matter how you slice it, to stay in the hunt, the Sox will need to play better than .500 baseball in June, all while taking key series from division rivals.

Red Sox Roll Into July

If the Sox can manage to put a solid month together and make up ground in the division and wildcard races, they may view themselves as buyers at the deadline. Even then, it’s not a given, as they would still have a month of baseball before the trade deadline. Still, making up ground in June and rolling in with a chance to be sellers is a morale boost for a young club. With the weather warming up in New England, the talented Red Sox offense could be quite dangerous.

Buying at the deadline would be a departure from the norm of the past few seasons, which would provide a jolt on its own, and the Sox have pieces to move. With so many major league-ready players down on the farm and great young talent on the roster, the Red Sox could find themselves amid many trade discussions to bolster the club down the stretch. According to an MSN report, the club may add a front-of-the-rotation starter and get some help for a very taxed bullpen. Then, just maybe, the Red Sox could make a strong run down the stretch and into the playoffs.

A July Fire Sale

If the Sox fail to make up ground in June, they will likely roll into July getting themselves into position for a fire sale. The Red Sox do have several attractive trade pieces to move if they decide to go that route, and the team desperately needs young pitching talent. This could end up being the best option for the Sox moving forward.

Chapman would likely be the first player out the door, as teams are already monitoring the status around Chapman, waiting on the Sox to make him available. According to Jeff Passan at ESPN, general managers have indicated that Wilyer Abreu and Jaren Duran could be on the move as well. Walker Buehler and Alex Bregman could be other pieces on the move, but less likely. Boston could bring back a wealth of talent with any of those pieces.

End Of My Red Sox Rant

The next few weeks will bring more clarity around the future of the 2025 Red Sox. The season began with so much hope, and now may be best salvaged by a fire sale. These are tough days to be a fan, and some hard conversations are going to have to be had, regardless of how this season turns out. For now, Sox fans can help by bringing a playoff atmosphere to every home game in June.
