Now, after comments on the Ball in the Family podcast sparked retirement reports, Ball has made his status clear: He has not retired and is still waiting for an NBA team to call. Lonzo Ball is not playing because he is a free agent, not because he officially retired. The Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to the Utah Jazz in February, and Utah waived him shortly afterward. Ball has remained unsigned since, although he said on Sept. 23 that he is still “waiting for a call.”
Ball played 35 games for Cleveland during the 2025-26 season, averaging 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 20.8 minutes per game.

At the February trade deadline, Cleveland sent Ball and two future second-round picks to Utah in a three-team deal involving the Atlanta Hawks. The NBA’s official report on the trade detailed the transaction.
Utah waived Ball on Feb. 5, and he has remained a free agent ever since.
No, Lonzo Ball has not announced his retirement from the NBA. Ball actually directly pushed back on retirement reports on Sept. 23, saying he was still waiting for an NBA team to reach out to him and give him a new opportunity in the league.
The confusion started after Ball reflected on his injury-altered career during a Ball in the Family podcast conversation with former NBA star Gilbert Arenas.
“I feel like I never short-changed the game. I feel like I gave everything I had to hoop. And I feel like everything I got in my life is because of hoop.”
Ball also discussed how his injuries affected what he could physically do on the court.
“You see where you’re supposed to be and you physically can’t get there.”
He later admitted:
“I feel like, to be honest, I don’t think I ever got to my peak.”
Those comments sounded like a player reflecting on the end of a career, but Ball never actually announced his retirement. Yahoo Sports also noted that Ball did not say he was finished playing.
Ball then responded directly on X.
“I retired? News to me lol cuz I’m still waiting for a call… NBA season long 🤷🏻♂️”
NBC Sports reported on Ball’s response, while CBS Sports updated its reporting after Ball pushed back on the retirement claim.
Ball’s left-knee problems are a major reason the retirement comments gained so much attention.
The injury eventually cost him the entire 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. After previous procedures failed to solve the problem, Ball underwent a meniscus and cartilage transplant in March 2023.
He eventually made it back to the NBA, but his career never returned to its previous trajectory.

That history explains why comments about giving everything he had to basketball sounded like a farewell. It does not mean Ball actually retired.
Ball believes he can. His response to the retirement reports made that clear.
The bigger question is whether an NBA team agrees.
Ball is still only 28 and has averaged 10.6 points, 5.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals across 322 regular-season games. But his recent production and extensive knee history give teams legitimate reasons to be cautious.
He averaged just 4.6 points per game with Cleveland before being traded.
There is no reason to speculate about possible destinations until credible interest emerges. Injuries, trades and roster changes can create opportunities during a long NBA season, which is essentially the point Ball made himself.
For now, Ball is available and waiting for a chance to get his NBA Carrer back on track.
