As we enter the new year, 20 games played in the Premier League the questions at the bottom of the table is who will survive the relegation zone. There have been some posing questions about the strength of rosters that the clubs near the bottom of the table pose. Of course now with an opportunity to bolster their squads as the winter transfer window has opened. As we know it is very difficult to maintain longevity in the Premier League the first season up from promotion for the championship. Yes that is why we call the playoff final in the championship “the most expensive match in football”.
Southampton:
Let’s being with Southampton, who sit bottom of the league on 6 points after 20 games. The task might seem a little too steep to be climbed. Ivan Juric is now in the hot seat, who oddly enough elected to try and formulate a miracle at Southampton after being relived of his duties earlier in the season from AS Roma. The Injury to Arron Ramsdale certainly didn’t help their already leaky defense, that features a -32 goal difference as of now, the most in the division. If in fact they go down, it has to be said where will Tyler Dibbling play his football next year? A youngster only 18 years of age, full of exuberance and flair.
Leicester:
The club that has lifted one of the most historic Premier League titles back in 2015-16 are now struggling towards the bottom of the league. With Enzo Maresca taking his talents to the blue side of London after promotion from the Championship last season. Steve Cooper took the post of Manager at the club but didn’t impress to be honest. After the sacking of Steve Cooper, Ruud Van Nistelrooy was brought in to try and steady the ship.
A team that hasn’t won since December 3rd, are still seemingly looking dependent on the production of Jamie Vardy. The now 37-year-old is still showing glimpses of his old self but you can only wonder if it’s enough to keep them in the division. At the moment they are on 14 points, do they have enough offensive prowess and defensive stability to remain in the Premier League?
Ipswich Town:
Out of the three clubs in the bottom 3 at the moment, Ipswich for my liking have shown the most fight and ambition. In their last two games, they managed to grab 4 points a massively impressive 2-0 against Chelsea at Portman road, followed by a 2-2 draw against a very inform Fulham, conceding a stoppage time penalty to Raul Jimenez.
This has been a theme of Ipswich’s season so far, playing very good stylistic football but coming up just short on the details or bits of luck that don’t go their way. Keiran McKenna and his staff certainly will not give up the fight and will battle to the very end. They currently are on 16 points after 20 games played, but have certainly showed glimpses of real quality.
End Of Premier League Rant: Wolves and Everton:
Just poking their head above the drop zone are Wolves, who we saw struggle to score without their main man Matheus Cunha in their side. One place above Wolves is Everton, who always seem to scrap out results when needed to steer them away from the drop zone. This should be a vert frantic finale towards the end of the season, it might well go down to the last game of the season However we are a long. long way away from that, as every match from here on in can be treated as a final, such the significance of the points up for grabs.
