Starting pitching has always been one of the most important aspects of building a championship level roster. Teams with elite pitchers at the top of their rotation simply tend to go further when it matters most. This article will present an opinionated ranking of this season’s top Aces.

10. Mackenzie Gore

Nationals news: MacKenzie Gore shuts down Cubs with 7 scoreless innings

The Washington Nationals Ace has taken a major leap in the first half of the season, posting a career low 2.87 ERA. Gore has been an absolute gem for this young Nationals team, throwing quality start after quality start. Gore leads the league in strikeouts with 108, and K/9 with a whopping 12.9. If Gore continues in the direction he’s heading, he will find himself even higher on these rankings sooner rather than later.

9. Kodai Senga

Kodai Senga Dealt No-Decision Despite Solid Outing - MLB News | Fantasy ...

Despite missing most of last year with an injury, Senga has been absolutely terrific in his third season in America. The Mets ace has a miniscule ERA of just 1.60 which ranks him third in the MLB. Senga has been eating hitters alive with his signature Ghost forkball since he came into the league and this season has not changed that.

8. Hunter Brown

Astros’ Hunter Brown ready for return to Detroit: ‘This is where the ...

Hunter Brown has allowed more than 3 runs in a start only once this season. In his 13 starts, he has allowed one run or fewer in 9 of them. He has earned his 1.82 ERA by dominating hitters all season long. Digging into some advanced stats, he has a 99th percentile pitching run value with a +16, according to baseball savant. The astros ace has busted onto the scene with no signs of going away anytime soon.

7. Nathan Eovaldi

Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi secures his ace of October status

Nathan Eovaldi has been nothing short of elite this season. Posting the second lowest ERA in the Majors with a 1.56 Earned Run Average and a .80 WHIP leads the pack as well. Before his recent IL stint, the two-time all-star was pitching the best of his career. Allowing no more than 3 runs in each start this season, there is no blemish on record that would say Eovaldi is not a top 10 pitcher.

6. Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasts 1 inning in Dodgers debut, gives up 5 runs to ...

In just his second year over from Japan, Yamamoto has displayed the amazing talent that earned him his $325 million contract. A 2.20 ERA certainly helps Yamamoto here, but the untapped ace potential for the 26-year-old is also incredibly appealing. Yamamoto has made substantial growth from his first season in the league so if that trend can continue it would be expected that Yamamoto will only rise as he reaches his prime.

5. Logan Webb

Giants news: Logan Webb on verge of breaking record held by Madison ...

Across his last two starts Webb has pitched 14 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out 17. The 7th year veteran is trending towards his third straight season with 200+ innings pitched. Unseen from most pitchers in the league, Webb is one of the few that can consistently go every fifth day and give his team a chance to win. A 2.58 ERA from Webb may not be as low as others on this list, but Webb’s ace reputation is so strong it allows for easier placement in the top 5.

4. Garrett Crochet

About NESN | Your home for Red Sox, Bruins and New England sports

The Red Sox took advantage of a selling White Sox club, and they acquired their ace for many years to come. Crochet was long considered injury prone, which made the White Sox heavily manage his innings last season. In the innings he did pitch though, Crochet took full advantage. Posting a 12.9 K/9 in his first season as a starter, Crochet gave an awfully good showing for any trade partner that may take a chance on the 6’6 lefty. The Red Sox did exactly that and they have been heavily rewarded. Crochet currently leads the league in innings pitched and strikeouts and has a 2.35 ERA.

3. Zack Wheeler

Phillies Make Zack Wheeler Announcement Ahead of Blue Jays Game ...

Since joining the Phillies in 2020 Zack Wheeler has just about been a staple in the top 5 starting pitchers and one of the best Aces in the sport. In his 6 years in Philly Wheeler has demonstrated elite consistency, only having an ERA larger than 3 once. Another factor into Wheeler being as highly ranked as he typically is would be the incredible durability that isn’t often seen anymore. Wheeler starts just about every game the Phillies ask with no complaints. Earlier this season Wheeler had a 26-inning scoreless streak that spanned across three games and ended vs the Atlanta Braves. The Braves have been the only team to give Wheeler more than 4 Runs this season, doing so twice.

2. Paul Skenes

Pittsburgh Penguins Breaking News & Latest Rumors | SNP

Paul Skenes has been exactly what people thought he would be. Absolutely dominant and unhittable. The reigning rookie of the year and Cy Young finalist has been just as good as last season. With an ERA around 2 and a WHIP at .87, Skenes has been elite, but he did change his approach. This season it seems that Skenes has sacrificed some of the strikeouts and long counts to get early contact to manage his pitch count. This makes him even more dangerous as he has learned how to go deeper into games. The league’s most feared pitcher is only getting better.

1.Tarik Skubal

The Tigers ace has been on a simply unbelievable run in the past two weeks, his last three starts include:

The start vs the Guardians is one of the greatest pitching performances ever seen. a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts all while only throwing 94 pitches. Skubal has an ERA of 2.16 with a WHIP of around .81. Add on his absurd league leading 15.00 K/BB, and you have the ACE of the MLB.

End Of My ACE Rant

There are many pitchers that were left off this list that absolutely deserved to make an appearance. From veterans like Jacob DeGrom to the MLB ERA leader Kris Bubic, names had to be left off. If there were additional spots in the ranking they may have gotten in, but for now they are simply honorable mentions. Read more MLB news from StadiumRank here.
