The New England Patriots have appointed Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator, marking his third tenure with the organization. In this capacity, he will collaborate with head coach Mike Vrabel.
His recent coaching experience was marked by a challenging tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders, during which he was relieved of his duties midway through the season. He was officially terminated from his position as head coach on Nov. 1, 2023, after concluding his tenure with a record of nine wins and 16 losses throughout less than two seasons.
Players Who Have Produced Under The Josh McDaniels System
This comes as the franchise enhances to bolster its offensive strategy under new head coach Mike Vrabel. McDaniels will be able to mentor rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the third overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft.
In 2020 with Josh McDaniels as the Patriots’ OC, Cam Newton ranked fourth among qualified QBs in play-action rate. Only 20 of his 137 carries were scrambles. He got seven wins out of a broken-down Cam Newton who could not throw anymore.
Josh McDaniels served as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, during which Mac Jones recorded 3,801 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting. McDaniels helped make Mac look like a solid quarterback. Mac Jones is the backup quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, behind Trevor Lawrence.
Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne had a career-high 800 receiving yards and 125 rushing yards under Josh McDaniels, and he tied a career-high with five touchdowns. He had a career year in Josh McDaniels’ offense in 2021 – his first year with the Patriots. Now Bourne gets McDaniels back, is another year removed from that torn ACL, and will be working with a QB he already has experience with.
End Of Rant: Josh McDaniels’ Experience On The Patriots
He has worked with and developed young quarterbacks. Has vast experience calling plays. Has a history with Vrabel. Most importantly he has always been a successful coordinator for the Patriots.
He has previously served in similar roles under Bill Belichick. McDaniels has a rich history with the Patriots, having spent over a decade with the team. With another promising young QB at the helm, it will be interesting to see what he can accomplish with New England, entering in much more of a rebuilding stage than he has ever been part of as an OC.
