The Twins began 2026 with several top prospects on the cusp of a major league debut and despite injuries delaying several of them we still got to see what the future of this team may look like. Both Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper have provided reasons for Twins fans to be optimistic about the teams young core.
The Twins’ top two prospects for 2026 were Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper. Culpepper was the first to appear in the majors, and despite having his call-up likely delayed due to injury, he made an immediate impact by hitting a home run in his first major league game. He continued to hit .275 before going on the injured list on September 16th with a hamstring strain. However he provided stability to a shortstop position that the Twins had been trying to piece together by committee before his arrival.
It remains to be seen if he is able to stay at SS long term and he may not have long to prove himself before another top prospect (Marek Houston) gets a chance to show what he can do. Culpepper definitely has the athleticism that the Twins have been starved for and that alone is a welcome addition. For Culpepper, a move to 3rd or 2nd base may be more likely where he ends up. His arm strength is not in question, but scouting report suggest he does not have the range to profile as an everyday ss. Offensively, a 25/4 strikeout to walk ratio is not ideal, however he makes hard contact and I can live with the strikeouts if he does consistent damage.
Walker Jenkins was the Twins’ first-round draft pick in the 2023 draft and has been regarded as one the best prospects the Twins have in many years. He made his long awaited debut on August 28th and had a modest debut, hitting a single, drawing a walk and getting the start in center field. Despite having some struggles, Jenkins has gone 12-for-35 with three home runs and a .961 OPS over his last 10 games. Those types of numbers are more what Twins fans were hoping for. Jenkins is the type of prospect that you hope will be the best player on the team in the coming years, and if his recent play is an indicator of how good he can be, Twins fans should be excited.
Jenkins’ scouting report will tell you that he is a good athlete, capable of playing CF, and Twins fans are well aware that this team needs someone who can handle that position when Buxton is unavailable. Offensively, he is much more of a contact hitter than Culpepper. In the Minors he controlled the strike zone, he walked almost as much as he struck out over a decent sample size. Obviously, against major league pitching that plate discipline may not be as good as we have seen. If Jenkins can continue to contribute on a similar level, he will quickly become one of the most important hitters in the Twins lineup.
For 2027, Twins fans should hope and expect both Jenkins and Culpepper to be major contributors. At least at this point, I think fans should see Culpepper as the opening day SS. He has been solid overall, despite some mistakes in the field that can be expected from a rookie, and let’s be real, the Twins don’t really have anyone else on the roster you would want getting significant playing time at ss. For Jenkins it’s a little less clear because Buxton will be the CF if/when he is healthy. However with Jenkins hot streak to end the season he may have earned himself a chance to have a legitimate shot to be on the opening day roster.
