Team USA had a chance for history tonight in the 2025 IIHF WJC tournament. Since the inception of the tourney in 1977, team USA had never won back-to-back gold medals in consecutive years. However, coming into tonight’s final against team Finland, the USA juniors had a chance to accomplish that feat…..and they did it in thrilling, exciting, come-from-behind fashion!
The outlook wasn’t very good at the start. Coming into tonight’s game, the only loss that team USA suffered in the preliminary round, was to Finland. Tonight, in front of a sold-out crowd in Ottawa Canada, The Fins got off to a great start. Team Finland controlled most of the first period and the first half of the second period before Team USA put on their jets.
Trailing 3-1 late in the second and with the USA fans in attendance definitely concerned, the Americans got goals by Brandon Svoboda, which banked off the shoulder of a Finnish Defender into the net, and then with only 28.7 seconds left in the period, Cole Hutson, whose brother Lane is a standout rookie defender for the Montreal Canadiens, knotted the score at 3-3 to go into the third.
Team USA had never gone to back to back finals in the tourney before, and with 10 players along with head coach David Carle returning this year, the Americans were ready to take charge in the third. And take charge they did!! They totally dominated the period getting numerous scoring chances but just could not get the go ahead goal. With the all-time series between these two teams 19-19-1 in the history of this tournament it was appropriate for the game to head into overtime which we did noted at 3!
After a 15 minute intermission the overtime began with each team playing 3 on 3 hockey until someone scored the winner. The atmosphere in the arena was extremely tense, with former USA juniors and current Ottawa Senators Brady Tkachuk and Shane Pinto in the audience to cheer their American brethren to victory. The pressure was even more amped up for USA goalie Drew Augustine who knew that one mistake would cost his team and country a win.

However, with his team totally dominating the overtime, the USA kids finally prevailed on a goal from Boston Colleges Teddy Stiga to win the IIHF Gold medal. Ironically it was Stiga’s first goal of the entire tournament. Team USA now has back-to-back gold medals for the first time in team tournament history and becomes the fifth country ever to win back-to-back gold medals in the tournament
