The Detroit Tigers are making moves before the start of their tilt with the Chicago White Sox on June 2nd, 2025, with OF Justyn-Henry Malloy being sent back down to Triple-A Toledo, with OF Parker Meadows returning to the Tigers dugout for the first time this season. Meadows has been on the injured list since February 22, 2025, a nerve injury in his upper right arm, causing him to miss the first 60 games.
An Outfielder For An Outfielder

Justyn-Henry Malloy has been with the Tigers twice this season, being sent down initially to start the season, Malloy has been an injury replacement as a bulk of Detroit’s outfield has been on the mend. Malloy has a batting average of .213 in 93 at-bats with 1 home run and 16 RBI. The speedy outfielder’s most notable contribution this season was a timely walk-off hit against Boston in May. While Malloy has good speed, his lack of offensive production handcuffs his longevity on the team.
Parker Meadows has been a sparkplug for the Tigers in the past, with the club going 49-26 with Meadows in the lineup. In his rehab assignment, Meadows, in 33 plate appearances, hit for a .259 average with a 1.004 OPS, a significant improvement from 2024. His one home run against eight strikeouts is a comparable ratio to his stats last season of nine HRs and 76 Ks in 270 plate appearances.
Line-Up Shuffling
Parker Meadows returning to the line-up means that there will be some bodies moving around positions this series. Javier Baez has been a revelation in centerfield defensively; however, with Meadows returning to his natural position, that leaves manager A.J. Hinch with some unenviable choices to make for his defense. Baez has shown to be a versatile, team player this season having been a plug-and-play guy for Hinch. There are other guys as well, same vein as Baez like a Zack McKinstry who has started to make a name for himself in the line-up, but some one is going to have to be the odd man out daily.
A case could be made to put Baez back at shortstop for the time being, as current shortstop Trey Sweeney has been on a cold streak lately. While it seemed Sweeney had caught up to the game during the Colorado series in April, he has hit a serious slump, gathering only three hits in his last ten games. The recent addition Wenceel Perez has created more of a glut in the outfield as he is platooning with Kerry Carpenter in right.
Fielding Chaos
Throughout the 2024 playoff push for Detroit, the phrase ‘pitching chaos’ was coined as the Tigers had one legitimate arm that was healthy going into the postseason in Tarik Skubal. This season is offering a different chaotic potion as there is a new defensive look daily. Hinch has shown he is not afraid of utilizing his bench in every game, and with some of the players that may be sitting to start a game, there is a good chance that they will still see action in the later innings.
End Of My Tigers’ Rant
One thing is certain: Meadows’ return to the lineup will be a net positive for the Tigers in the long run. Meadows will reclaim his spot in the order, batting lead off, which will push Carpenter a bit further down to either third or fourth. Recently, Carpenter has had a slight dip in his offensive numbers over the last few series, going back to Cleveland, but getting back to his natural spot in the order might get him right.
It bodes well for the Tigers that, despite some guys having to go on the injured list, they can get some of their better bats back into the lineup and not miss a beat.
