Trae Young is expected to decline his $48.97 million player option and enter free agency. Here’s a look at potential landing spots including the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.
According to veteran NBA Reporter Marc J. Spears, the Washington Wizards remain one of the teams linked to Young as a potential long-term destination. Young averaged 15.2 points per game on 59.5% FG, shot 42.9% from beyond the arc, and had 6.2 assists per game this season.
Could The Miami Heat Sign Trae Young In Free Agency?

The Young backup plan for the Heat is actually more interesting than people are giving it credit for. Bam Adebayo as the pick-and-roll partner for one of the best pick-and-roll point guards in the league. Heat culture forcing Trae to buy into defense for the first time in his career. Pat Riley has done more with less.
But there is a massive difference between Giannis Antetokounmpo and Young. One is the most physically dominant player on the planet; the other is a liability on defense who needs everything built around him offensively. Miami does not just want a star; they want to compete for a championship right now. Trae gets them excited. Antetokounmpo gets them a title contender.
Would Trae Young Fit With Victor Wembanyama And The Spurs?

One could argue the Spurs may have had a better chance of winning the NBA Finals with Young’s offensive creation. All they needed was a point guard to run the offense when the defense got tight in the 4th quarter. Their defense would have been worse, but Victor Wembanyama covering the paint would have made it work.
Trae’s skill set elevates teammates. He has already proven he can maximize big men like Clint Capela and make players like John Collins look much better offensively. Last year, they had Chris Paul, which was a great experience but not long-term.
A hypothetical trade package would involve them having to give up Fox, one unprotected first-round pick, and one future swap. The Wizards still consider themselves a rebuilding team, and finding a deal for Anthony Davis and Young could be the optimal choice.
This could unlock so much for Washington. AJ Dybantsa could really excel with them if De’Aaron is their starting PG over Trae. Finding the right energy to connect with certain pieces is a key component to breaking out of mediocrity.
Could The Brooklyn Nets Pursue Trae Young This Summer?

The Nets could pursue Young because he and Michael Porter Jr. used to be teammates in the AAU, and they need a point guard. This would be good for the Los Angeles Lakers because it will kill most of Austin Reaves’ leverage and they could get him cheaper.
He would make Nicklaus Claxton, Noah Clowney, Day’Ron Sharpe, Egor Demin, and everyone else better. He can teach Nolan Traore, but he can also attract other players.
They have real cap space this summer. If Brooklyn plans on signing him, drafting Brayden Burries or Yaxel Lendeborg might make sense at six. He would be the best point guard they have had since Jason Kidd and Kyrie Irving. The potential rivalry with the New York Knicks could become part of Brooklyn’s pitch.
Why Adding Trae Young To Jokic And Murray Would Sink The Nuggets

Young can shoot and handle the ball. Put him at the one and Jamal Murray at the two. He gives the Nuggets some much-needed swagger that they do not currently have.
They need to become more athletic and improve their defense. Trae would be the absolute worst player to add if Denver wanted to improve their defense and agility. A trio of him, Murray, and Nikola Jokic would look great together offensively, but it would sink them because all of them are awful defensively.
Why The Sacramento Kings Should Consider Trae Young

If the Kings were smart, they would sign Young because Sacramento remains in search of a clear long-term direction. They might be one of the few teams that should take a chance on Trae at this point.
Their defense would probably still be lacking a little bit, but they would have three-point shooting, which was needed because Russell Westbrook made the most threes this year, at 128, for the team. Sacramento lost Tyrese Haliburton and Fox, who are also point guards.
End Of My Trae Young Rant

The Wizards already have Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, and the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Darryn Peterson and Dybantsa are both looming as potential selections.
If Young stays Washington could become one of the league’s most dangerous young teams overnight. If he leaves they still possess enough talent and assets to shape a promising future.
While the Wizards remain the favorite, the Heat, Spurs, Nets, Nuggets, and Kings all present intriguing possibilities. Young’s free agency decision could reshape multiple franchises heading into the 2026-27 season.
