The Texas Rangers finished the 2024 season with the 10th-best farm system, according to Bleacher Report. The Rangers have three prospects featured in MLB’s Top 100 Rankings signaling a promising future. While one of these players may make an immediate impact this season, the others are still a few years away from contributing at the Major League level.
The 2024 season saw mixed results for the Rangers’ young talent. Rising stars Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford faced injuries, but several prospects stepped up to deliver standout performances.
After completing Tommy John surgery, Kumar Rocker carved his way to the big leagues and had much success. Teenage phenom Sebastian Walcott had a breakout season that could position him as one of the top prospects in all of baseball. Alejandro Rosario made the biggest leap in the Rangers’ system during the 2024 season. Despite the down year, the Rangers’ have an exciting roster for 2025 and some reinforcements on the way.
Here’s a closer look at these three rising stars:
Sebastian Walcott – 3B
Level: Double-A | Height/Weight: 6’4”, 200 | Bat/Thrown: R/R | ETA: 2027
The big-framed teenager is already producing some of the highest exit velocities in the Minor Leagues, and with refinement, Walcott has the potential to reach his sky-high ceiling.
Walcott has displayed double-plus power to the pull side, recording exit velocities as high as 116 mph. While he initially had a tendency to overcommit to the pull side, he made significant adjustments as the 2024 season progressed.
These improvements translated into elevated performance. Over his final 57 games, Walcott posted an impressive .295/.351/.500 slash line, splitting time between High-A and some Double-A appearances. After striking out 32.5% of the time in the Arizona Complex League, he reduced his strikeout rate to 25.5% across 116 games at High-A, demonstrating growth in his plate discipline.
Walcott’s power-over-hit profile is extraordinary, showcasing his natural talent at the plate. With his large frame offering even more potential for power, he projects as a player with a 35+ home run upside.
Kumar Rocker – RHP
Level: MLB | Height/Weight: 6’5”, 235 | Bat/Thrown: R/R | ETA: 2024
Kumar Rocker’s journey to the majors has been anything but conventional. After being selected 10th overall by the New York Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft but not signing due to medical concerns, Rocker underwent shoulder surgery and impressed the Rangers during his time in the Independent Frontier League. The Rangers signed him to a $5.2 million deal, and he has since made a remarkable recovery from Tommy John surgery.
In 2024, Rocker’s revamped delivery and improved arsenal made him a standout. His fastball sits in the upper 90s, complemented by a two-seamer with late arm-side run. His best weapon is a slider that he can manipulate for speed and break, ranging from a hard, cutter-like 90 mph to a slurvy mid-80s breaker.
With the potential to become a top-tier starter, Rocker’s success in 2024 suggests he’s ready for a permanent role in the Rangers’ rotation. Even if he starts the season in the minors, a quick call-up is likely.
Alejandro Rosario – RHP
Level: High-A | Height/Weight: 6’2”, 190 | Bat/Thrown: R/R | ETA: 2026
From being outside the Rangers’ top 30 prospects in 2023 to climbing to the 86th spot on the 2024 prospect rankings, Rosario has made the most significant leap in the organization.
Rosario features an impressive three-pitch mix. His fastball sits at 96-98 mph with horizontal run, generating whiffs at the top of the zone and inducing ground balls due to its movement.
His breaking ball, sitting in the mid-80s, is highly versatile, with the ability to show either sweeping action or traditional north-south break, making it effective against both right- and left-handed hitters. His slider, featuring vertical bite, is a strike machine, landing for strikes nearly 70% of the time and offering the potential for a high whiff rate.
Rosario also throws a splitter, a pitch the Rangers encouraged him to use more often. Sitting in the low 90s, the splitter is a reliable weapon, generating both high whiff and ground ball rates. Effective in any count and against hitters from both sides, the splitter has become a key element of his arsenal and reflects the growing popularity of the pitch.
A standout performer in the Rangers’ system during the 2024 season, Rosario is a testament to the team’s developmental success. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 draft after a challenging 7.11 ERA season at the University of Miami, Rosario has exceeded expectations.
With his current trajectory, Rosario projects as a reliable No. 3 starter, but his continued development could elevate his ceiling even further.
Texas Rangers: Outlook For 2025 And Beyond
While Kumar Rocker could play a significant role for the Rangers this season, Sebastian Walcott and Alejandro Rosario are progressing steadily and remain key pieces for the future. All three have All-Star potential, offering Rangers fans plenty to be excited about as the team looks to return to contention.
