The US state of California has had some notable sporting stars. Tiger Woods, Ted Williams, and Tony Gwynn are three who stand out. Those sportsmen from California who became legends in their respective sports.

Ted Williams

Ted Williams is a California sports icon who is now included in the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was in the city of San Diego that he first honed his game and undoubtedly became a skilled player.

He received some early offers from St Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees, but rejected them in favor of the local Padres. Minor league stints with hometown San Diego Padres and Minneapolis Millers would follow.

He joined the Major League in 1939 with the Red Sox. He began to lead the league in RBIs and finished fourth in MVP balloting. It would not be long before he became regarded as one of the most potent left-handers in the game.

Overall, he won two MVP awards and two Triple Crowns. He also entered into brief military service in Korea. Here, McArthur and Williams were familiar with each other, as McArthur was a fan.

In 1960, Williams retired from the game by hitting a home run. This home run has since become famous in Baseball’s history.

Tiger Woods

Another notable California sports icon who has entered golf’s hall of fame is Tiger Woods. He has also been voted into the California Hall of Fame.

Turing professional in 1996, he won his first major at Augusta, The Masters tournament. This was by a record score and would pave the way for an almost unparalleled number of major victories.

In 2001, his Master’s victory set the seal on what is known as the Tiger Slam. This was achieved by winning all four major tournaments of the same year. The year two thousand and two would see the Masters victory repeated. Something that only a very small number of golfers have previously done

A most recent 2019 US Masters victory has taken his major haul up to 15, three short of the overall record of 18. It is unlikely Woods will win any further majors for a player of his age and relative inactivity.

Tony Gwynn

Tony Gwynn is another California baseball player! Not just any old player, but also one who ranks in the Hall of Fame. Statistically, he is one of the most consistent hitters in the history of the sport.

For 20 years, Gwynn plied his trade for California’s San Diego Padres and seldom batted below 300 in a single season. He is an eight-time National League batting champion. There is no doubting his place as a sports icon of the state of California.

End Of My Greatest California Sport Icons Rant

Those three Californian sportsmen are legends of their sports, with historic achievements. While Woods probably won’t set a record for majors won, for California, they are all professional sports icons. Few other American states have comparable sporting icons to California.
