Arsenal and Barcelona have played nine games against each other in the Champions League. There have been some thrilling matches between the two sides, resulting in plenty of goals and excellent soccer. These are some of the great Arsenal vs Barcelona soccer matches played in Europe.
This was a great victory for the Gunners, as it was their first win against the Catalan giants. For much of the first half, Barcelona was the better team and, as per usual, were so comfortable in possession that Arsenal chased shadows. Barcelona took the lead thanks to Villa’s goal, and that advantage would remain for the rest of the half.
Second-half substitutions changed the game when Arsenal began to press for an equalizer, which duly came when Van Persie scored in the last 15 minutes of the half. Minutes later, Nasri scored a second goal for Arsenal to put them 2-1 up, and this remained the scoreline until the end of the game. It was a great first victory against the Catalan giants, which was not enough to win them the tie, as Barcelona finished Arsenal off in the return leg en route to Champions League glory.
This is one of the biggest games in Arsenal’s history, and perhaps also one of the biggest matches in Barcelona’s history. The 2006 Champions League final was Arsenal’s first final in UEFA’s flagship tournament. Although it was not Barcelona’s first time, the Champions League glory had eluded the Catalan giants since 1992.
Arsenal started the game well, and Henry had good chances to give the Gunners an early lead. The game turned when Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Lehmann, was sent off for his foul in the first half. Arsenal played through the rest of the game with their 10 men and even went a goal up in the first half. They retained this lead for much of the second half until a couple of late goals from Barcelona won the game. The final scoreline was Barcelona 2, Arsenal 1.
This quarter-final clash between Arsenal and Barcelona was another exciting match. Barcelona dominated the first half of this game, but somehow Arsenal held out to keep the score 0-0 thanks to some great saves from their goalkeeper.
In the second half, Barcelona scored an early goal and then added a second goal, which left the Gunners seemingly down and out. Arsenal clawed their way back into the game, and five minutes from time, Fabregas netted a penalty to equalize for the Gunners. It was a good comeback, but not enough to take them to the next round, as Barcelona outclassed them in the return leg.
Those Arsenal vs Barcelona games have certainly been among the best encounters between the sides. Overall, Barcelona has had the better of their games, with Arsenal having won the final and the two ties covered here. If these teams win their Champions League semi-finals this season, they’ll play each other again in the 2025 final for what would surely be another pulsating clash.
