The Champions League, formerly the European Cup, features the best club teams in Europe. The final of the Champions League always includes good teams with some great players. There have been some classic European Cup finals dating back to the 1950s. Here are a few of the great finals played in soccer’s best club tournament.
This European Cup final of the 1960s was one of the best games ever played in the tournament’s history. It featured the great Real Madrid team that had dominated European soccer and was looking to add a record fifth title in a row. Frankfurt was the top German side, but they were still not a great match for the talents of Puskas, Di Stefano, and co.
Despite this, Frankfurt went in front during the game. Madrid broke that lead and stormed ahead thanks to goals from Di Stefano and Puskas, putting them 5-1 up at half-time. In the second half, the game was much more equal as Frankfurt pulled two goals back. Two goals from Real Madrid left the score line 7-3 overall as they went on to win their fifth European title.
No English club team had ever won the European Cup before Manchester Utd defeated Benfica in this final. Utd’s campaigns in Europe had shown some promise, and this great Utd team had the likes of Best and Charlton, among other great players. In 1968, they became the first English club team to reach the European Cup final and had the chance to be the first to win it against Benfica at Wembley.
In the final, Utd took the lead against Benfica after Charlton opened the scoring in the second half. A great Benfica goal pulled the score level to 1-1 towards the end of the game. After 90 minutes, the game remained deadlocked and went into extra time. During extra time, Benfica began to tire, and Utd gained the lead thanks to Best’s goal. Further goals would follow for Utd, as they added two goals to run out 4-1 winners. As such, they were the first English team to win the European Cup after this great final.
This classic European Cup final between Liverpool and AC-Milan in 2005 saw a fine comeback from Liverpool. AC-Milan dominated the first half of this game and scored an early goal from Maldini. Then, Crespo added two others towards the end of the first half to leave Liverpool three goals behind in this final.
The Reds were not quite out of the game, and Gerrard’s goal in the second half pulled a goal back for Liverpool. Smicer and Alonso soon added two others to equalize within 10 minutes. The remarkable turnaround could not see any further goals added as the game ended 3-3 after extra time. As such, penalties decided the final, and the ‘miracle of Istanbul’ ended with a Liverpool victory.
These were three classic European Cup finals that had great teams, exciting soccer, and lots of goals. They are some of the best games ever played in UEFA’s flagship cup, and were thrilling final climaxes. Hopefully, we’ll see more of the same in the 2025 Champions League final.
