When one thinks of sports, the mind rolls to Football, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, and Soccer. In the past ten years, video gaming has developed into one of the most widely popular pastimes. More recently, gaming has transformed into an international competitive sport, with eSports being the sector for those seeking to enter the field professionally. Recently, a study was done to identify countries with the highest concentration of gamers. The United States took first place.

The Birth of Gaming Culture

Gaming culture has been building for decades. 1972 was the launchpad for what would become one of the most popular pastimes. Mims Museum notes that German American engineer Ralph Baer is known as the progenitor of gaming culture. The Odyssey was his creation. Not only was it the first home system marketed, but it went on to inspire the development of Atari.

“It was Baer’s creation that inspired gaming pioneer Nolan Bushnell of Atari to create his own version: the much more popular and world-renowned Pong, programmed by Al Alcorn.”

Gaming took off, and various competitors entered the arena, vying for the attention of an emerging market with massive potential for lucrativeness. What once felt like a fad became much more.

The Birth of the eSports Industry

Gaming is unique in that the hardware and associated games have become period markers. Much of the IP (Intellectual property) has expanded across franchises. What is most intriguing is the expansion of gaming into a rapidly growing profession. As ECG production notes,

Few industries have risen as rapidly as eSports. Once a niche for dedicated gamers, it’s now a global force with multi-million-dollar tournaments, packed stadiums, and vast streaming audiences.

United States Rules the eSports Sector

With all of this, it becomes of great interest to know which market has the greatest potential for growth in this sector. Based on a recent study, the United States ranks high, as the quantitative data infers that America has the most gamers in comparative markets. A recent study by CasinooftheKings identified,

The top gaming countries by analyzing key engagement metrics, including the share of video gamers, percentage of Steam users, number of esports players, and their earnings.”

Gaming Ranks By The Numbers

The top three in the sector are Sweden, with a 77% share of video gamers $56.8 million in eSports earnings. Denmark comes in at number two with a 72% share of video gamers and 61.9 million in eSports earnings. The United States comes in at an 83% share of video gamers and $289.8 million in eSports earnings. Such a massive lead in the sector is very revealing. The most significant portion of gamers, as well as competitive gamers, can be found in America. It is noted,

The country combines a high gaming population (83% of residents play video games) with major competitive success, creating the largest gaming market globally.

Future Outlook For eSports

The news gets even better for those interested in participating in the eSports profession, as the market forecast looks favorable.

“By 2028, the market is expected to have over 920 million users. This rapid rise is attributed to increased internet access, streaming platforms like Twitch and Youtube, and the growing acceptance of gaming as a legitimate competitive field.”

With the increasing popularity of gaming, coupled with the large pool of gamers, it is safe to say that the United States is a great place to source talent in the eSports sector, which is highly positive. Market saturation heightens the level of competition, intensifying the difficulty of securing a coveted career as a professional gamer.

Following A Passion for Gaming

For passionate people who have the required skillset, there is always potential for opportunity, and these opportunities are expected to persist for some time to come. That concludes my eSports rant.
