For years, Ferrari has been almost synonymous with Formula One. It is the only team that has participated in all 75 seasons, and its name carries prestige that other contenders could never match. Many of the most famous drivers dreamed of competing in a race behind the wheel of the scarlet car. Ferrari means history. However, in the last couple of seasons, it has also meant heartbreak. And no one knows that better than Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc has been a Formula One driver since 2018. He began his story with Sauber, in which he only spent one season. In 2019, he was signed by Ferrari, and neither he nor the team ever looked back. Ever since the first race of that season, their tales became intertwined. Ferrari proved their commitment by giving him the longest contract in the team’s history. In return, Leclerc stated that his dream wasn’t only to win the World Championship, but to do so while dressed in red.
“To Charles, you are the most talented driver I came across in 15 years of F1. Don’t waste it. But be sure whatever you do to be happy and smile. Thanks for everything!”
Those were the words four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel wrote to Leclerc as he finished his adventure with Formula One. The two had been teammates at the beginning of the Monegasque’s time at Ferrari, so Vettel had the chance to watch his talent from up close. His sentiment is mirrored by many people tied to the sport. Leclerc is lightning fast, smart on track, and able to fight with even the most challenging opponents. By all means, he is the perfect candidate for the title every Formula One driver dreams of winning.
Aside from praise, Vettel’s goodbye included a warning: don’t waste the talent you were blessed with. While at the time, the words sounded too distant to matter, as the seasons flew by, they gained a sinister undertone. Because, as the man Leclerc grew up racing, Max Verstappen, went on to win championship after championship, his efforts went unawarded.
It would be easy to say that he may simply not be talented enough, but that would be a statement removed from the truth. The reason why Leclerc’s achievements seem so underwhelming is the fact that he hasn’t been given the machinery to fight for the biggest prizes. He extracts everything he can from the cars he’s given, but there is nothing he can do to force the engine to work harder and the wheels to spin faster.
Throughout his career, Leclerc managed to win eight Grand Prix and achieve 27 pole positions. It’s a statistic that is often used to belittle his talent. “Great pole-to-win ratio, worth of a real champion,” people say in mocking tones. In reality, it’s not that he cannot convert poles into wins. It’s that he can put the car where it never should have been in the first place. There is a reason why he is considered to be one of the sport’s best qualifiers.
With all that being said, instead of fighting for championships, he has to fight his cars. Ferrari hasn’t been able to produce a car worthy of a champion since the beginning of the 2022 season. Even then, as the races progressed, the team took a wrong turn with development and lost the advantage they had over the competition. Year after year, Leclerc’s efforts, as well as his talent, were wasted. In a way, Vettel’s warning became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If nothing changes in Leclerc’s story, he will sadly become a Formula One ‘what if?’. For years to come, people will wonder what he could have achieved had he been given the proper resources. Some will claim that he was one of the best they had ever seen. Others will nod with condescension and ask: “Then where are his titles?”.
Of course, it still isn’t too late for the tide to turn. If Ferrari manages to find their way back to the top, maybe with the help of the new regulations, Leclerc might be able to achieve his ultimate dream. He will win the World Drivers’ Championship with the team that he’s had in his heart for as long as he can remember.
But what if that never happens? What if Ferrari doesn’t return to their former glory? Will Leclerc ever decide that enough is enough and leave them behind? While many of his fans hope that he will be able to cut his losses, chances are he will stay with Ferrari until the day he decides to end his racing career. He has claimed on multiple occasions that for him, the value lies in bringing Ferrari back to the top, not just in becoming the champion. He has already invested so much into the team, it doesn’t seem likely that he will ever give up on it.
Leclerc’s fatal flaw is his unwavering loyalty. His heart bleeds red, and nothing matters more than fulfilling his biggest childhood dream and becoming Ferrari’s first champion since 2007. Will his passion ultimately cost him the legacy he deserves to leave behind? That is a question that will only be answered after his career comes to an end.
