Only a few soccer managers have ever won the Premier League. These great gaffers have had teams that have dominated the league and won numerous Premier League titles. These are four of the best-ever Premiership managers.
Alex Ferguson has been comfortably the most successful and longest-serving Premiership manager. He won 13 Premier League titles from 1992 (the year the Premier League debuted) to 2013, never finishing outside the top three.
Under Ferguson, United set Premiership records, including record wins such as a 9-0 thrashing of Ipswich. They were also in Europe, winning two Champions Leagues. Few football managers have comparable records to Ferguson. He was not just a great Premiership manager, but a great manager in English soccer.
Wenger is among the best-ever Premiership managers, having won three titles with Arsenal. His third title was won without losing a single game, the first time this had been done in the Premiership. That team set the record for the number of unbeaten games in England’s soccer league.
Wenger’s Arsenal teams were consistent, seldom finishing outside the top four of the Premiership (except for his last two seasons). His Arsenal teams often played excellent Premiership football, and the quality of their passing game was unrivalled by most teams.
José Mourinho’s Chelsea teams were not always the most exciting in the Premier League, but they got results. In fact, for two seasons they dominated the Premiership and lost only a few games. Mourinho won two Premiership titles with Chelsea (back to back) before leaving the club in 2007. The first of those was with a points total of 95. He returned to the club in 2013, winning his third title with them in 2015. Mourinho was undoubtedly one of the greatest Premiership managers ever, despite not having the same success in his stints at Manchester United or Tottenham.
Pep Guardiola turned Manchester City into a dominant force in English soccer from 2017 to 2023. During that period, Man City won six Premier League titles. His best title-winning team was quite unstoppable, setting a Premier League points total record of 100. Guardiola has also won the League Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League for Manchester City during his glorious reign.
So, those were four of the greatest Premiership managers. Guardiola, Wenger, Ferguson, and Mourinho have won multiple titles between them, and their teams have dominated Premiership football. The likes of Klopp, Ancelotti, and Conte were also great coaches who won the Premier League, but they didn’t win multiple titles for their clubs like those managers above.
