The Philadelphia Phillies looked dead in the water just weeks into the season. A 9–19 start under Rob Thomson had the Phillies spiraling, with playoff hopes fading fast. Since Don Mattingly took over as interim manager in late April, Philadelphia has become one of baseball’s hottest teams, winning 30 of their last 44 games and surging right back into contention.
Mattingly has unlocked something inside this roster. The energy is different, the stars are producing, and the belief is back. “Donnie Baseball” might bring the headlines from his Bronx Bombers glory days, but the results are real. Can this surge carry the Phillies into another deep October run?
Philadelphia’s pitching staff was among the worst in MLB through the first 28 games, posting a 5.30 earned run average (ERA). Under Mattingly, it has been one of the league’s best.
The bats have come alive as well for many of Philly’s superstars after a sluggish start to the season.
Philadelphia is still waiting for Bryce Harper (.253, 15 HR) to fully erupt. If and when that happens, this lineup could become dangerous in a way no opponent wants to face in October.
Even during this surge, the Phillies aren’t getting production from top to bottom. Mattingly has stabilized the clubhouse and gotten the stars going, but lengthening the lineup remains a major challenge. So far, the heart of the lineup has done the heavy lifting.
With the trade deadline less than two months away, it puts the spotlight squarely on Philadelphia’s president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, to make key additions.
Mattingly literally came within inches of his first World Series ring last fall as a bench coach with the Toronto Blue Jays. For a player widely viewed as Hall of Fame–worthy (falling just six votes shy in 2026), it was another near miss in a career filled with excellence. After managing the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins from 2011 to 2020, Mattingly believed that chapter of his life was over. With his son, Preston Mattingly, serving as general manager of the Phillies, the call to step in as interim manager was too good to pass up.
This may be Mattingly’s last chance at a World Series title, and for Harper (33), the clock is ticking. The two-time National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) led Philadelphia to the 2022 World Series, falling to the Houston Astros in six games. Harper was a juggernaut throughout that playoff run, winning the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP. With aging superstars and the road to the World Series running through Chavez Ravine and Shohei Ohtani for the foreseeable future, the odds are stacked against Mattingly and Harper.
