The New England Patriots signed Romeo Doubs, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, to a four-year contract for at least $68 million on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapaport. Doubs gives the Patriots a nice wide receiver two option in a room with Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, Pop Douglas, and Efton Chism III.
Doubs currently has an AAV of $17M, with the ability for the contract to get up to $80 million. This would currently make him the tied for 23rd-highest paid wide receiver in the league with Rashid Shaheed, according to Spotrac.
New England is still looking for a wide receiver one, but this is a step in the right direction after releasing 32-year-old Stefon Diggs for the 25-year-old Doubs.
The Packers were able to move on from Doubs’ services because they spent a first-round-pick on Matthew Golden, re-signed Christian Watson, and still have Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Savion Williams.
On top of one of the most underrated tight ends in the NFL, Tucker Kraft, who’s coming back from a torn ACL in his right knee.
What Does Doubs Add To The Patriots?

Doubs gives the Patriots and quarterback Drake Maye a legit weapon who’s coming off a career season in receiving yards at 724, and explosive plays at 21. This is also a receiver who was sixth among receivers with six touchdowns and caught eight passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in his last game as a Packer.

Doubs was also 36th in receptions at 55, 27th in drops with three, 33rd in yards per reception at 13.2, 13th in passing rating when targeted at 112.7, and 19th in average depth of target at 13.2, according to PFF.
Mina Kimes of ESPN also mentioned that Doubs should have a good connection over the middle of the field with Maye, and his route running and upside in the red zone as well.
Packers reporters and fans have also highlighted Doubs’ blocking, release, and defensive recognition.
Doubs is also able to separate and win routes, as he was 23rd and 11th in separation, while being fifth and second in route win rate. The exact type of receiver the Patriots needed since they struggled mightily in both categories come the postseason.
Sure, Doubs isn’t the number one wide receiver that New England fans were looking for, but he profiles as a really good number two wide receiver. The Patriots can now either look at the trade market or draft for their potential guy there.
Are There Any Concerns With Doubs?

Doubs has two concussions so far in his NFL career, one of them came in November of 2024, and the other one came in January of 2025. Doubs has missed eight games in his NFL career so far, including four games after his first concussion, and another four games after a high ankle sprain in 2022.
If you’ve ever watched a Packers game, you know exactly who he is because he’s one of the most well-known players who wears the guardian cap helmet for protection.
Another concern with Doubs is the fact that Packers fans have pointed out that his hands haven’t always been stout, so that’s definitely something to look out for.
The End Of My Doubs Rant

Multiple reporters have confirmed that signing Doubs doesn’t mean that the Patriots are out of the trade market for a receiver. New England now has their number two wide receiver, but AJ Brown and Brian Thomas Jr. are still out there for the taking, so act swiftly.
Overall, good move by New England, but this can’t be their biggest swing of the offseason in the wide receiver department, good first step though.
Doubs also reportedly chose Maye and the Patriots over the Commanders, according to Dianna Russini.
