The WNBA has a new member of the 5,000-point club, and it comes as no surprise. A’ja Wilson became the fastest player to achieve this milestone in 238 games. A left-handed lay-up during the first quarter of an 85-59 win vs. the Connecticut Sun was the field goal that crossed the 5,000 point career threshold to secure Wilson’s WNBA immortality.

Since entering the league in 2018, Wilson has displayed complete dominance on the offensive side of the basketball. She has the highest points per game average in league history (21.2). With a full arsenal of options in her skillset, the ability to take you under the rim and remain efficient from the mid-range makes Wilson a matchup nightmare. Ranking second this season in points per game average, the 6’4 forward has been the catalyst for a talented Aces squad expected to make a run in the playoffs.

Don’t Call It A Comeback

Since Wilson’s return from concussion protocol, she has averaged 22 points per game for the Las Vegas Aces. Her offensive output has commanded double teams, which has allowed her to average a career high in assists with 3.6. per contest. During this span, the Aces have gone 2-1and continue to play a more inspired brand of basketball behind the leadership of Wilson.

Records Are Made To Be Broken

Although currently ranked at 27th all-time on the league’s scoring list, Wilson is on pace to conquer the WNBA’s all-time scoring title by the time her career concludes. Diana Taurasi currently holds the record with 10646 career points in 565 games. From an analytics standpoint we are looking at the scoring title being shattered in four years less of play without an emphasis on the three-point shot.

End Of My A’ja Wilson Rant

It’s not often that fans have the opportunity to see an all-time great take center stage. We are living in an era where the majority of people wearing sneakers with a Jumpman logo never got to see the “Black Cat” play. Every legend has stories of exaggerated moments of greatness and myths of having impenetrable armor, but A’ja Wilson is indeed something we have never seen before. The three-time WNBA MVP will eventually become the league’s all-time leading scorer, and watching the game game by game is a luxury.
