The New York Yankees are having one of their most plagued seasons in recent memory. The 2025 season is currently a reflection of bad fundamentals and a level of play that is at the utmost frustrating for fans. Since the Aaron Boone era of Yankees baseball, it has been nothing but disappointment year after year, and it’s officially time to make a change.

Yankees Cannot Upstage Their Rivals Anymore

The Yankees and Red Sox are a rivalry as old as time. From the days of the infamous Babe Ruth trade to the ruthless 70s and 2000s matchups, both teams are linked to each other as eternal opponents. The Yankees used to dominate the matchup, but the tide has turned.

The Red Sox have now won all of their matchups against the Bronx Bombers in 2025, and the Yankees haven’t done anything about it.

In their two series meetups against Boston back in June, the Yanks were nearly swept in the seven games they played against one another. The Yankees have only taken the first game of every meetup so far this season. The Red Sox have their number this year, and it kicked off the Bronx Bombers’ summer downfall.

The Red Sox made clean work of the Yankees in June, including a Rafael Devers home run that sent Boston into a frenzy. That would be Devers’ last home run for Boston, a bittersweet gift to Red Sox fans before being traded to the San Francisco Giants.

The Yankees went on a hot streak in mid-August, beating the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays, which culminated in a five-game winning streak. This hot streak may have been the type of fire and slugging that the team needed to get energized and ready for Boston.

That fire quickly faded during their first matchup against Boston on August 21st when the Boys In Pinstripes threw away a winnable game. The Bronx Bombers had committed four errors in Thursday’s loss, practically handing the Red Sox the win on a silver platter.

The next day, the offense was nonexistent, with a 1-0 shutout by Boston. No matter what changes the Yankees make to the lineup or what players they acquire, they lack fundamental baseball skills and fail to shine in essential games, leading to epic collapses.

The Yankees Can’t Beat Good Teams

Whether it’s the abysmal defense and 12 errors committed against the Toronto Blue Jays or the offensive onslaught by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees can’t win against good baseball teams. It seems that this season, no matter what kind of streak they go on, or historic franchise records they keep matching, they disappear under the bright lights.

New York has struggled to get wins over the first-place teams throughout the league this season. They are currently 1-2 against the Houston Astros, 3-7 against the Blue Jays, 1-2 against the Detroit Tigers, and 1-2 against every first-place team in the National League. The only exception is the Milwaukee Brewers, where the Yankees have a 3-0 record.

This 3-0 record came during Opening Day Weekend of the 2025 season, so many fans may not count it, as teams were adjusting to the new season.

Yankees Need To Change Everything

Every fan and their mother is calling for Boone’s job, but more changes need to be made. Firing Boone is a temporary solution that could help them win in the short run. He has a reputation for “coddling” his players in post-game interviews. He is known to defend his players no matter how awful they played that day.

While it is expected of the manager to protect their players in the media, there comes a point where there is no accountability. This lack of accountability leads to excuses for losses throughout the season and an inability to address the minor issues that significantly impact postseason play.

When recently asked about the loss against the Red Sox on Thursday, Boone said

“Overall, we expect to be better. I also feel like we have a great chance that our best baseball is in front of us,”

The Yankees’ skipper is famously known for his phrase, “it’s right in front of us,” throughout his tenure. This phrase has become a head scratcher and a source of frustration, as it offers little accountability and excessive optimism that does not reflect in their play.

The Boone media style rubs off on the players, often leading them to be optimistic in their answers rather than keeping themselves accountable and acknowledging mistakes. When asked about the four errors during Thursday’s loss, Jazz Chisholm Jr. responded in a way that can sound like a Boone-type answer:

“I feel like we have great fielders on the team, we’ve got a bunch of Gold Glovers in the infield,”

The organization’s over-optimism needs to stop, and changes are necessary among the coaching staff. The quote can also be a reflection on how the analytical team does not believe in hot streaks. Former Yankee Clint Frazier called out the Yankees’ analytical team on the Foul Territory podcast, saying:

“I could go 55-for-55, and they would be like, ‘he’s not hot, he’s going to cool down.’ They believed you were what you were,” he said. “And in my mind, I was like, that’s not using your eyes… You gotta run with that sometimes.”

The Bronx Bombers have had questionable baserunning and are now infamous for their sloppy defense. Changes are required not just on the managerial staff, but also on the coaching staff.

The Yankees have left too many runners in scoring position this season. They are currently ranked 26th in LOB%, and while it is high at 7.04, the team is unable to turn those loaded bases into runs.

The Bronx Bombers are not a situational hitting team, and viewers can see that by the way they swing. They tend to swing for the fences rather than putting the ball in play, which often results in double plays and groundouts. It is widely known that Aaron Judge utilizes his own hitting coach and is untrustworthy of the Yankees’ hitting staff.

End Of My Yankees Rant

Fans can only hope and wait for the firing of Boone. His questionable bullpen choices and head-scratching quotes are reaching a boiling point. Although not the sole cause of the Yankees’ woes, he has become the face of their recent failures over the years. Mistake after mistake has been made, and fans wonder how he is still the manager.

Fans have questioned the foundation of the team and its need for changes within the system itself. Many other teams have made regime changes and have become successful; the Yankees are still stuck in the past.

It is now a waiting game for this current regime to change, but the clock is ticking to sustain a Wild Card Spot and for guys like Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Gerrit Cole to win a ring in the Bronx.
