A decade ago, during the Process Era, the only thing fans of the Philadelphia 76ers had to look forward to was the NBA Draft Lottery. Now, Sixers fans find themselves in a familiar position at the tail end of Joel Embiid’s career. This summer is a monumental turning point in the franchise’s history, and it all hinges on the bounce of a ping-pong ball this Monday evening in Chicago.

During Embiid’s career, the 76ers have had one guiding principle: Find talent fast, because once Embiid’s window as a dominant, generational NBA center closes, it will close quickly. That window slammed shut on the front office’s fingers last summer in Paris at the Olympics. It seems inconceivable that Philadelphia can trade his contract without giving up valuable assets. Ditto for podcaster Paul George, who is due 51 million next season on the second year of a four-year deal.

Unfortunately, general manager Daryl Morey’s recent comments leave little doubt about the team’s direction. During a local radio appearance, he confirmed that he has no plans to break up the 76ers’ big 3; the draft lottery will decide if the Sixers can add young talent to a roster desperate for it.

If The 76ers Keep Their Pick…

Cooper Flagg to the 76ers?

…Cooper Flagg time! Admittedly, it’s a bit of a stretch; even if the Sixers keep their pick, they only have a 10.5% chance to land first overall. It’s hard to imagine the Duke Blue Devils slipping, but a 1 in 10 chance to immediately revive the franchise will have Sixers fans packing Xfinity in South Philly.

Even a consolation prize at two overall, Dylan Harper at second overall, would solidify the Sixers’ backcourt for half a decade. In a top heavy NBA Draft, missing out on a top 5 pick could cripple the franchise for years to come.

If Sixers Fans See Them Lose The Pick

Expect a singularly depressing offseason. You’ll have to listen to his podcast to understand George’s motivation for the upcoming season. Forced to care about the midlevel exception drama with Guerschon Yabusele and Quinton Grimes, with that voice in the back of Sixers fans’ heads: George and Embiid will not make it through a season healthy, what is even the point of all this?

End Of My 76ers Lottery Rant

Monday is a massive night in the franchise’s history, and its impact will be felt for years. The difference between a futile season or seasons, or renewed hope for a franchise that has not made it out of the second round of the playoffs in a quarter of a century.

The Sixers have seen division rivals like the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks build, contend, and rebuild again, while Philadelphia has yet to break out of its cycle. A top 5 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft could break that cycle for good.
